That 40th anniversary is just sooooooo nice that no matter what you throw at it, it will always be awesome IMO.

Nice bass and I love dark boards with blocks and binding.

To each his own I guess. The gold pickguard is plain with rough edges. The new pickguard is a thick 4 ply with a decent bevel.

Thought the pickguard was the gold aluminum version (which I like). After two recent eye surgeries and two more to come it's easy for me to miss that beveled edge in your pic. Even typing has become difficult. I see it now after a closer look. If it comes with poorly finished edges I agree, it has to go.

It is the gold aluminum version. I tried to like it. It's not poorly finished it's just thin with a slight eased edge that can feel sharp when placing fingers and thumb against it.

I recently purchased a Squier 40th Anniversary P bass with a gold anodized aluminum pickguard. I never could get used to the pickguard. I bought this pearl parchment pickguard off of Amazon for 18 dollars. Big improvement. Very happy with it. I looked for Squier replacements but every P bass replacement said it wouldn't work for Squier, including this one. I took a chance and it fit perfectly like it was made for my bass.

I could never get on with anodized pickguards, so I completely understand where you're coming from. Look great, but feel weird.

I've never found the ones from Fender were sharp and thick enough to be intrusive fingernail catchers.

I like the way the original pickguard matches with the gold hardware. Why mess with harmony?

I had that pickguard (or one much like it) on my Vintera P bass. I loved the color, but hated that it was metal (cold to the touch), Even worse was the feeling when you touched it with your thumbnail. It sent shivers down my spine.

Never owned a bass with a metal pickguard but have experienced a similar feeling with cold strings on outdoor winter gigs. I've found that the best solution is to put alcohol on my lips, tongue, inside of my mouth, and my esophagus. Gets rid of that 'cold to the touch' feeling right away.
