NPsD --- Ampeg Scrambler Overdrive and Classic Preamp

Tried it out on my upright for a gig, but my MXR 6-Band EQ is better at pinpointing the rogue frequency ranges that can mess up the sound of your upright. Have messed with it a little at home, and it sounds a little brighter than I like with the treble knob at noon, but that's easily taken care of. Couldn't tell you if it's flat at noon, but definitely sounds Ampeggy and is very easy to tweak your sound into greatness.


Looking forward to hearing what you think. I'm just a little bit disappointed that I won't be one of a very tiny few people in this world with a Scrambler anymore, but I'm pretty excited for my friends at Ampeg and I truly think most people are going to love it.

Oh don't get me wrong I wasn't putting digitech down they have great products and been in the game for a long time. Yup can cut if too bright. I was looking for a member the other day and noticed you @JimmyM have the most posts like 98000 plus or something. I've read allot of your posts/comments and you've jumped in on allot of topics throughout talkbass and I think that's pretty cool. Cheers man and I'll post once I get my classic pedal.

I just picked up an Ampeg Scrambler for $45 from a guy on Craigslist (along with a Xotic SP Comp for $45, but that's a whole different thread) and I must say I am pretty impressed. The first OD I've tried that I actually like. Now if I could only find a true Bass distortion I like, but I digress. Very transparent OD and seems to add a nice bit of grit. Very usable tones with most settings. It may end up being an always on pedal for me. Right now I don't have room for it on my gigging pedal board, but I'm going to be rethinking things I guess. I have a PT nano-sized board with 1590A pedals.

How many 1590a pedals can you get on a Nano? Wish I could find 1590a pedals for everything I want but that doesn't seem to be happening.

I have my Line 6 G30 receiver and 5 1590A pedals on there. I'm thinking about getting another to daisy chain with it. I'm using these inexpensive Ammoon PT Nano clones and I've got an Anker USB battery powering the whole thing. I'm thinking of getting a Mini DI, Bass EQ, EHX Green Russian Reissue, and Bass Distortion to be named later. Potentiall modding a Boss DS-1. If I could find 1590A pedals to compete with the Scrambler and the EHX, plus a good distortion I'd be thrilled!

Well I've not heard anything quite like the Scrambler in any other OD pedals at all, 1590a or otherwise. There are some that are quite good for sure, but the Scrambler is very unique to me with its extreme touch sensitivity and transparency. Definitely the least compressed OD I've used.

SO wish they would have put a DI on the Classic Preamp like the SCR-DI has and the MXR M81 Bass Preamp I'm currently using.

As an Ampeg 'fanatic' I'd really like to give the preamp pedal a try but think I would miss the DI and don't want the size of the SCR-DI.

Jimmy - any chance you could talk to your friends at Ampeg and have them add the DI - - oh, and a Class D amp that does 2 ohms? :D

It'll cost you. Price point is the name of the game. You might want to check with Mike Putnam of Putnam guitars and see if he could add one to it.

Found one of these unopened on the verb with free shipping for $60 so I figured I'd give it a shot. I used to joke about Dino constantly using the phrase "blow your face off distortion" in the demo videos for the SCR-DI. I take a glance at the manual and what do I see for a preset? "Blow Your Face Off Distortion".

I gotta say, this is a very usable pedal for my tastes. I like the overdriven amp style distortion and this pairs up well with the Sansamp BDDI. I didn't care too much for the Scrambler section on the SCR-DI but as a stand alone pedal and the addition of the treble pot, you can get some great tones from this pedal. Controls are very sensitive as well.

Can anybody (@JimmyM?) comment of using the Classic Pre with the Scrambler, as an alternative to a full-on "Ampeg rig"? You know, to get that lovely, clean-yet-tubey tone?

A lot, or most, of my gigs are IEM. I was thinking that the Classic Pre and Scrambler, along with my Broughton H/LPF might be able to cop that Ampeg 'fridge kinda tone? Maybe??
