Double Bass NS Design NXT Megathread

I recently bought an NS Design 4. I like the sound of the E and A strings but the D and G are somewhat thin, at least to my taste. Sounds better out of my 1-15 cab but I can't always cart that around. It has the Contemporary strings on it (with the hole in the ball end). I like a fuller, deeper, vintage sound (both on my Fender P, Ibanez Acoustic and this NS). Would I be better off going to the NS Traditional strings, the new GHS Crossovers or something else, maybe the LaBella Tapewounds or the Piastra Obligatos? (It seems that putting full sized DB strings on the NS can be a challenge.) I play mostly bluegrass and the open G and D's are kinda important but these Contemporaries don't sound good to my ears.

Here's the video demo I made of the Crossovers. Everything is using the line out of my Phil Jones Bass Double Four into Garage Band. No editing, with the exception of setting volumes.

I believe that the bolt size is 5/16" - don't know what the thread count is, though - so you might just need to grab a couple different options.

Edit: Just went and tried counting threads. It's a fair bet that you need a 5/16-18 bolt, about 3 inches long. Grab a couple washers, too - it might be a touch too long.

I play my NXT with the frame strap system and I like it okay. The one drawback is that the NXT is not a light instrument, it weighs almost 11 lbs, so when it's strapped on that's quite a bit of weight. I don't mind it because I'm used to playing heavy (11+ lbs) banjos, but you need to keep that in mind if you're going to use the frame strap. The nice thing about the frame strap is it is fully adjustable as to playing position and angle of the neck/fingerboard. I almost exclusively sit when I'm playing mine, so I don't mind the weight. I also play mine with the endpin stand as well and I like it.

The face of the waist support part of the stand isn't padded. It is completely adjustable in terms of angle and how far away you stand away from the bass. You can adjust it to pretty closely to approximate how you stand/hold your regular upright. But it's definitely not the same as playing your upright, but it wasn't meant to be.

I'm looking at picking up an NXT 4, but I don't like the looks of the tripod stand (and I move around quite a bit while playing). Is there an option for a straight endpin? If not, is the strap system a viable solution?

All of the accessories for the basses and Omnibasses are inter-compatible. You can use the stock tripod, the upgraded tripod, the boomerang strap, the full strap system, and the endpin stand with an NXT bass.

I'm a BIG fan of the endpin stand with my CR. Gives me a better feel that's closer to the URB than just the tripod.

So I saw it mentioned earlier in the thread but no real response, unless I missed it...but has anyone swapped the arco/pizz switch for a blend knob? doesn't seem like it'd be too hard to do. I'll have to take a look at it when my NXT arrives in a couple days, if the switch itself bothers me enough I may try to wire a knob up. a blend knob seems more useful to me than a switch would be, but we'll see how it works out in real life...

I believe that folks looked into it, and due to the way the setup is wired (and certain additional electronic components) that it wouldn't be practical; the passive setup doesn't lend itself to a blend knob, you really need the active preamp to accomplish it. Maybe it was a phase issue, or something else -- and I could be remembering wrongly, as well...
