Double Bass NS Design NXT Megathread

The NXTa has a "buffer" - which means it does provide appropriate buffering, but the electronics (treble roll off, volume) are passive. So you have the benefit of the piezo buffer, but it's not a true "preamp" in the same sense of the word. It requires that you recharge the system for a minute or so, prior to play, for 18 hours of play time. You can also pull out the volume knob to bypass the buffer and play in passive mode.
Out is active- in is passive, according to manual.

New to changing upright strings and on the NXT. I have a set of Spirocore.

Do you cut the length at all? How many wraps are you putting on the tuning peg is using non- NS strings? I have them running properly through the back slots for the non-ns strings. just seems to be a lot of extra.

I've just changed the strings from contemporary to traditional. Even those needed quite a bit of cutting down, despite being made for the NXT. I found that for the higher strings there was not much of a problem, but the lower strings just didn't fit. On the other hand I think that if the strings go around the tuner a couple of times it should be sufficient, and that's what I've done.

Cool. thanks

Picking up an NXTa 5 string next weekend and Ive been looking into either the endpin or the strap. Is there a cheaper alternative to get a little more mobile than the tripod will allow?

I got the end pin and the tripod with mine and I never use the end pin. The tripod is sturdy, light, and easy to pivot around for upper register playing. I thought I would prefer the end pin, but I was wrong. I’d recommend giving the tripod a shot first, if you haven’t tried it already.

Put a set of NS traditional strings on my new NXT5 a few days ago. I see clearly what others were saying now about that set, in regards to bowing, and more of a standard or shall we say ‘traditional’ upright tone and feel, lol. I prefer those over the contemporary set that came on the bass, for sure. I also changed out the tuners for some nice Gotohs that I had. The thicker and deeper winding stem on the Gotohs is a nice change, and I put about three wraps on them like I do for my standard electric basses.

I picked mine up this morning and realized that it didn't have the charger. Does anyone know how I can get a hold of one?

It should be included. It wasn't with mine (the UK distributor forgot about it), so I asked the bass store and they sorted it for me within a few days. I've never seen any mention of anybody selling chargers separately, so contacting some store that sells the basses is probably the only way to go.

So I had a really busy day yesterday and didn't really get to play it much. It wasn't until this morning, that I realized it's not an NXTa, just an NXT. Now I'm debating if I should take it back. Did I overpay at $950 for a 5 string NXT?

No you did not overpay. I paid about 1500 for my NXT 4 string.

Also, I have spoken to the tech dept at NS and they will provide NXT owners with the preamp for a very reasonable price if you want to retrofit.

$950 is a steal. I paid near the same price for my NXT5 used before shipping. You do know some of these NXT5's had ebony boards. I think now they use phenolic for the fingerboards but correct me if I am wrong. That is what I heard.

I bought my NXT5 several years ago and trually am loving it. I have restrung it with Traditional strings and again have been pleased.

I have been wondering for quite sometime if there is a way to make it sound more acoustical like a traditional double bass??

I have never run any effects other than an occasional chorus but not part of my dominant sound.

Don’t have a standard upright right now but might in the future. I realize that the issues with transporting and getting a nice live sound can also be an obstacle.

I have a strong feeling that I am not the only one wishing that we had an option that would make this bass sound more like a traditional upright for some songs.

I would love to hear Mark Gollihur reply- I really value his input and support on this thread.

Again, let me state I have been very satisfied with my bass and wouldn’t change much about it.
