Double Bass NS Design NXT Megathread

Really not clear what you mean here by "purpose". My bass amp has a 1MOhm input impedance. Plugging my NXT directly into it "works", but the dynamic envelope and sonic detail is *much* better with the Fishman in the chain ahead of it. Yes, that means I've got two tone stacks (fortunately, on my bass amp, there's an EQ bypass switch), and an extra volume control (I tend to set the Fishman to deliver something reasonable and modulate with the amp, just 'cos it's easier to reach on stage). I suppose I *could* run the Fishman directly into the FX return on the amp, to bypass the built-in pre-amp and have a very slightly better signal/noise ratio, but for practical purposes just plugging it into the lower impedance is the minimum change to what I do with my other basses, so I stick with that signal flow. If I were going into a PA or a recording console, I'd just run the Fishman straight into the board.

Thanks. My amp is a Euphonic Audio uAmp 500, so I can bypass the EQ.

Yes...and I am not sure how to treat true bypass pedals in this respect...
If the preamp has an effects loop, put them in there.
Either way, you really want those downstream from the initial impedance buffer. If the preamp is the kind that you want directly feeding the PA or recording device, and you want effects between it and the bass, it may be necessary to get a separate impedance buffer to go first in the chain. Something single-purpose, like fdeck's HPF pre or the Schatten pre.

Yes, that's what I thought… and that's why I put my pedals into my preamp's FX loop as my preamp (EBS MBII) is both my impedance buffer and my DI out...

Always been interested in the NS double basses so I recently picked up a used NXT. I have replaced the original strings with the D'Addario NS610 Traditional's. I'm just wondering now about setting up the neck and string (bridge) height. Any recommendations on string height and amount of relief in the neck would be greatly appreciated. There doesn't seem to be much information available.

My bag for my NXT5 is starting to get a bit ragged. Any suggestions that don't cost an arm and a leg?
When I bought mine from Golihur, they suggested a rigid plastic ski carrier (with wheels, even) that has just about exactly the dimensions of the NXT in its bag and was actually quite cheap. I bought it and it's perfect. It won't replace your bag per se, but if you use one, the bag will survive a lot longer, and it will matter a lot less if it has a tear or a broken zipper.

Edit: It's this thing. Price has gone up a bit since I got mine, but still much cheaper than most instrument road cases: Lightweight Plastic Travel Case for NS Design Bass Instruments at Gollihur Music - Double Bass, Upright Bass, String Bass Specialists

Is that a single or double ski case?
Smaller than most ski cases you see in airports, but pretty sure it would fit a pair. But I don't ski. It's just the right size for an NXT in its bag with the stand and a bow, with space to spare for maybe a bag of cables, without things banging around inside. Really clever of Golihur to have spotted it. IIRC I payed $129 for it at the time, but that was at least 5 years ago, and they had some kind of bundle deal on with the NXT.
