Are there really two independent pickups, or is it just a phase/wiring thing? For example, the Fishman Full Circle allows for two types of response by rotating the PU 90 degrees. I'm assuming that this results in either a phase shift or an actual difference in the pickup pattern. Regardless, it doesn't result in two separate signals. If the NS does have two independent pickups, then it might be possible to wire a blend circuit. On the NS basses with a separate magnetic pickup, you do have this type of wiring.

Yeah, I might be barking up the wrong tree with this blend idea. I talked to my tech guy at length yestrerday and this might not be the proper solution for this instrument.
Maybe what I really want is a CR model with EMG's!
In any case, I think the hunt is still on for a proper preamp.
I need something with the best match for the impedance, tons of headroom, and a powerful EQ to scoop out the glacky mid clank of the piezo. I'm interested in checking out that DTAR pre/EQ...
I know the preamp thing has been discussed a good bit in this thread...anybody having luck with any new toys? Still having luck with what you've been using?

Now I have a CR5M, not a WAV, but I've found the L.R.Baggs parametric DI works great. It has a parametric EQ, tons of control on it, and a built in DI. I've used it on lots of gigs now, even toured with it, and all the sound guys I've worked with love it.

Jason, I was originally going to buy the WAV4 until two friends persuaded me to go for a CR. I bought the CR4M and certainly have not regretted it, it is a great bass. A number of posts on the NS DB mega thread all said there was no need for any extra preamping but I have found using my trusty Sansamp BDDI cuts the mids a bit further and gives me the kind of sound I like. If you can get the money together it would be worth your while buying a CR, not to put down the WAV of course.

I've been using an Aguilar DB924. I've always been happy with the tone for live use, but I discovered while recording that it sounds even better direct.
The main downside to the 924 is the lack of an AC adapter. I'm now using two battery snap cables and a Voodoo Labs PP2+, so that takes care of that.
Have any of you who currently own a WAV4 contemplated replacing the stock tuners with aftermarkets, especially ones that would better accommodate double bass strings? besides the weak factory supplied stand, I see this as the only other weak point of this bass. Although it seems that most have had (more or less) no trouble with the stock tuners. My initial thoughts would be that if one did want to install better tuners (lets say Hipshots like what are on Azola and BSX basses), I'm almost certain that the holes would have to be bored out a little more to fit.
Thanks for that, Bob. A bit of a long shot, but do you happen to have a schematic for the CR4/CR5 by any chance? That might indicate how closely related the two are and what chance there would be of successfully incorporating a blend pot.

I have an Aggie DB924 as well. Nice pedal, but I'm still favoring my cheapo Boss Bass EQ...I've found 800 is the most offensive frequency so far.
I also remember another post way back about inserting some foam under the strings to mellow the tone...
I put a piece in the after-length and then one on the other side of the bridge under the strings (not unlike one of those old Fender/Rickenbacker bridge mutes).
It looks like crap, but sounds much better! I think when the strings break in a bit, most of the harshness will go away.

I'm pleased someone else has tried the foam packing. I suggested it a while ago but from the way you describe it, yours sounds a bit more aggressive than mine. I just packed each side of the bridge in the slot, nothing actually touches the strings.
As for the tone control, I have both volume and tone fully clockwise and do all the eq on the amp. I've fitted Obligatos, with them and the foam packing I found I could get exactly the sound I wanted from the parametric eq on the G&K MB150E amp.
Cool...yeah, I wish the tone knob was more mellow, but it's pretty harsh sounding to me. Off sounds best.
I will try forming the foam to fit in the bridge slot prior to my maiden voyage with the instrument this coming week.
I've been shedding on it for a few weeks before I spring it on my band mates...also trying to dial in the optimium tones for the gig.

I have my tone control about halfway for Pizz, almost all the way off for Arco. However, I have the WAV running through Channel 2 of a BassBone, which gives me 4-band tone control. On the Bone, my bass is 3/4 treble at 12 o'clock, mids almost flat. From the recordings I've heard, it works well.

with your first outing. I got stuck in with gigs about 4 weeks after getting the bass. Initially I took along an EB as a bit of a crutch, but now I don't bother and just go for it. Ok the intonation isn't absolutely perfect but I'm getting there and after listening back to a recent recording of the band I think I'm being hypercritical.
I still have the stock strings. When I first got my bass the strings were so bright I need the tone all the way off, just like you describe. I've been playing the bass regularly for about 3 months and the strings have changed dramatically. Now my tone is about 60% on.
I play pizzicato with the switch up (arco setting?) all the time. The tone is dark and punchy. With my switch down the tone is brighter and sounds more like an bass guitar.
Here's a question for you guys...
With my switch down the volume is cut in half. It's twice as loud with the switch in the up position. Is anybody else having this same experience?
The up (Arco) setting is louder for me when I use the bow, but about equal. When Bowing, I have to turn the bass volume down almost all the way to get it to balance with the Pizz volume. Initially I tried running the bass through an EB Jr volume pedal, but I found that the pedal drastically changed the tone of the bass.
So just to be clear, when playing pizz the volume is the same with the switch up or down?
On mine the volume is much quieter with the switch down.
If this is unusual, I may contact NS about it.
I'd have to say that when I play fingers tyle in the Arco position, the sound is about equal to when I play in the Pizz position. there is, of course, much less sustain and that annoying midrange "thunk" in Arco. When I play with the bow in Arco, the sound is MUCH louder than when I play with fingers in either setting.
