I've got a schechter diamond series C-4. I've had this thing for I don't know 13 years. I love the bass. Recently when I was replacing the strings, the nut just popped off. It's not broken or anything, I guess the glue holding it on has deteriorated. I just put the strings back over top of it and they hold it in place. It doesn't slide up or down or anything. It seems to be fitting snug and doesn't seem to affect the tone or anything like that. I would like to get it glued back down though. So my question is what's the best way to go about doing this? Do I need a special glue or anything? Do I need to do anything else to it before I glue it back on? I've never done this kind of repair but I'm sure it's an easy fix. I just want to make sure I don't mess anything up in the process.

There only needs to be enough glue to hold the top nut in place while the strings are changed. More could make it very difficult to replace if necessary.

Smear a little Elmer's on the bottom, put it in place and tighten the strings to where they hold the nut in place from side to side. The bass won't be in tune. Let it dry over night. Or, two small drops of Super Glue in the bottom of the slot, about halfway of either side, press it in place and hold it for a few seconds and you're ready to go. With Super Glue, be very sure it's aligned side to side when you press it down. I prefer the Elmer's since it gives time to adjust it if it creeps to one side but either works well if a little care is taken.

Clean any old loose glue out of the slot and off the bottom side of the nut. Be careful not to remove any wood or nut material.
Then put a couple of small dots of a water-based glue under there and re-tighten the strings to pitch.
