nut too low?

I just bought a Sire V7 and am fine with it. But when I went to change the strings, just the E so far - it rattles against the whole fingerboard, I mean it is totally unusable. It was fine before I changed the strings. ***? The strings are a similar gauge to what was on there ... I do not get this at all. It seems like the nut is too low but why did the old strings work fine? The saddles are all very high, almost the max height they can be - there is very little room to raise the action at all. I've never experienced this problem.

What specific make/model/gauges are those new strings? If they're lighter in tension than the previous ones, it's possibly the neck has straightened out too much, resulting in unwanted buzz. Have you tuned the new strings up to proper pitch and let them settle before checking on the amount of the neck relief?

They're Rotosound-66 40/60/80/100
Tension is about identical. I only put one string (E) on since it's not really even usable at all, but yeah I tuned it to pitch.

Do you have any idea why the saddles are so high? They looked maxed out ...​

Just to make sure I understand you correctly... You had all four of the old strings tuned up to pitch. Then replaced only the E with the new one and tuned it up to pitch while the other three are still there intact. And all of a sudden, buzzing started. Is that it?

String them all up to pitch and see what it looks like. If you still need to go higher at the nut you can either try changing your truss rod relief or sticking a little bit of folded paper such as the paper your string came in and wedge it in the groove. I have an adjustable nut from Warwick so it's no longer a problem but I've done it before. Hope it helps.

Fret the 3rd fret and check the clearance on first fret. It should has same clearance as other string.

If the string just touch or closer to 1st fret than others, that's means nut slot cut too low from factory.

If yes, and you wanna do by yourself, try check haze guitar' s CA glue solution. I already done lot with this solution and work like charm.

Yeah, got to change all the strings. Changing just one isn’t going to give you an accurate picture of how the bass will play with your new brand of strings. Either way, when changing gauges and/or string manufacturers you’ll most definitely need to do some adjustments.

You need to loosen your truss rod.

Oh, you only have one string on the neck? Ha! Bro, you need to put them all on. The truss rod is designed to pull back against the pull of the strings. All of them.

Install all the strings, tune to pitch, then see what it's doing.

That the saddles are jacked to the top of their travel would not be a correct placement generally.

IF you are not experienced with evaluating and adjusting your bass to achieve a proper setup (and if you don't know, no harm in that), and if it's still not suitable for your playing after installing the new set of strings, find a qualified and experienced guitar repair tech and take it in and have it checked out.

If you're not experienced at this, any advice we pass along may easily make things worse, as it's impossible to diagnose these kinds of problems over the web.

You all who said to put the rest of the strings on were right of course (I didn't realize it would make that much difference). Still, the A and E strings buzz pretty bady, even open

Well, it's definitely above at the first fret, when fretting the 3rd. I'm going to see if I can raise the action on it any ...
