NV610 or...

Folks,

I need a cab...

My main gig at the moment is a VERY LOUD surf rock band, with a stupid-loud drummer, and a 100 watt Marshall to contend with, as well as another guitarist with a rotating cast of slightly smaller amps.

I'm borrowing a MarkBass 104HF for gigs at the moment which I can carry and is certainly loud enough... but it's SO not my cup of tea... no matter how I EQ it or play with the tweeter attenuator it seems to be all top and bottom with no character in the midrange. Not to mention I'm just not a fan of the ported cab sound.

I'm fascinated by the NV610... haven't heard one in the flesh but I love the classic SVT/8x10 sound and it seems the NV610 sounds even better and is much easier to schlep about... important as I'm a very small guy and not terribly strong! Loading in and out of my car should be easy, though the idea of doing stairs with a 100lb cab is fairly scary, as is up and down off high stages.

That said, realistically I am only playing average-sized bars/clubs... sort of size where I'd feel ridiculous rolling in with an 8x10... I'd like to think the NVs are significantly less imposing and not total overkill?

I'd love to be able to A/B a NV610 against a NV412 but that almost certainly isn't going to happen without some travel... let alone hearing just one! I'm pretty sure I'd be more of a 610 kind of dude though...

The other alternative I've been pondering is going modular with three or four sealed 2x10s. Maybe no reason behind this but I figure just two sealed 2x10s wouldn't be loud enough... The SVT210AV seems ideal here... only other sealed 2x10 I'm aware of is Hartke... anything else out there? I'd be interested in DIY-ing something if I had some guidance on what speakers to use and enclosure size...

I have a few preamps (RPM-1, WP100, and hoping to score a SVPCL soon... and would love a V-Type pre!) and a Crest CA9 for power. Big tube heads fascinate me and suspect I would love a Trace V8... as for basses, I'm mainly using a Rick and Jazz live.

Price isn't an issue really... just want THAT sound in a package I can schlep about myself and not look like a jerk...

Thoughts?

Thanks!

If you like the Berg sound you will love either one I just checked out both of them last weekend. The 10's are tighter but the 12" have more umph or gust to them. I think they were the same size and neither was particularly oversized. The 12's did look more intimidating I thought.

I have a NV610 and it's awesome! I love the tone coming out from that thing!
I use to own an Ampeg 810 and sold it to buy the Bergantino, let me tell you I've never looked back. I get the same sound or even better and in a smaller package, which is a big plus when moving it around.

The thing that would attract me to a double 210 rig is the vertical stacking thing. You don't get quite the concussion value of an 810, but you get a tall stack that has excellent dispersion characteristics and it would still pack a wallop.

That said, I still love to use my old 810. And by all accounts, the Berg 610 is the only new cab on the market that sounds like the old Ampeg 810's.

I put skid rails on the rear of my NV610 & stairs are a fair bit easier- tho not as easy as a 2x10 ;-)

these help, but so would one o' those stair walker hand trucks- w/ the 3 wheels / side!!!
BUt I'll agree w/ all other NV610 users- CANNOT beat that cab!!! & Aint heavy compared to most too. Sure it aint no 1x12 NEO....but!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How did you make those skid rails? I'd really like to fit them on my NV610 too...

You might want to check out the Markbass Classic 610. It has a tweeter, but you can turn it off. It is a sealed 610 like the Berg NV610, but quite a bit lighter. I'm not a fan of the MB 410 you've been using, but the Classic Series kills, and is lightweight.

Cabs of the size of the NV610 tilt into cars and onto stages. You tilt lift bottom and you are done. No leaning over like with a 4x10. Can actually be easier in most circumstances. I haven't been to the club you speak of but you got to get your sound first.
In my experience and I know the speaker cab experts may disagree but I always got more full tone and roar from a 4x10 than 2 2x10s. I can't see 2 2x10s cutting it with the volume needs you seem to have.
NV610 is calling you. That pre and pwr amp will drive that so nicely.

Thanks for the input, all!

Woah! I totally missed the MarkBass CL 106!

The NV610 really is calling me and the CA9 will absolutely kill with it... but the CL 106 is 30 lbs lighter, only 5 lbs more than the 104HF I'm schlepping now... and it looks like it does the tilt/caster thing.......

I thought the Markbass 6x10 was a weird impedence?

It's easier to wheel a 610 than carry a 410, however I wouldn't want to have to lift or carry a 610 upstairs.
The no-side-handles-on-the CL 106 thing kind of sucks. But if I can deal with the 65 lbs the 104HF, 5 lbs more for the CL 106 should be manageable, and in most situations easier... probably easier to drag up the stairs with help of the casters compared to lifting the 104HF the whole way!
6ohms... nothing strange about that unless you have a tube amp. One side of a CA9 running at 6ohms will knock a house down:bassist:
...could always bridge it as well :D

Would the 6 ohms thing be a bummer if I ever got something like a Trace V8?

So at this point it's CL 106, NV610, or stack of SVT210AVs. My heart wants the Berg but it's clearly the most impractical... not to mention not available locally... though it's probably the best sounding. Another thing to consider is that 3xSVT210AV is significantly cheaper than a either of the big boys (could actually get 4 for the same ballpark price, looking at new retail anyway...) and the whole modular thing is rather nice from a couple of perspectives...
