the funny thing to me about your friend's mugging (granted, in real life i'm sure there was nothing funny about it) ... is that he reminds me of a character i invented who was one my own alter egos.

my best friend and i had an idea for some short films that caricatured ourselves. my character was a scrawny white kid who wears a rasta hat, and plays funk bass badly, and calls himself "fingerstyle." he's always bopping around, acting "funky," and gets himself slapped a couple of times a day when he asks girls if they want to find out why his name is fingerstyle.

that wasn't a mugging, that was some neighborhood girl teaching him a lesson.

Heh, as I wasn't there in-person, you're probably right. Either way, he learned a lesson, and it's a good thing I wasn't there, as he'd have been pissed when I pretended not to know him. New York styled hospitality and camaraderie. This hopefully drills in the idea of that if you don't do idiotic things, you just might go one day without being mugged, cut, sexually harassed, gang-raped and set on fire whilst being laughed at and stepped over by the passers-by.

So...did you get a reality check and rename yourself "The Slap-and-Pop-master"?

Also, it's 96th street, the bastion of the Upper-West Side Jewry...in broad daylight. Surrounded by people. I would have mugged him and donated the money to charity, if just to set him straight. A little less funny at the time, sure, but he I'd be willing to bet a few passers-by had a good show that day, sick as it may seem.
