NYE gig, injured finger

Strained my RH middle finger bowling four weeks ago. Punk-a$$ phalange still hasn't healed. My DIP joint all swole and won't bend right. I can play okay, I guess, but definitely hurts to dig in, especially to play the B. Gonna tape it up good and see if I can't hit that stride between drunk enough not to feel it and not drunk enough to embarrass the band.

Any of you basstards ever had to tape a joint to get up and pluck? How'd it go?

Try a pick ... or ibuprofen

Found this bad boy at the local Walgreens.

Picked up some tape and some icy hot spray too. This has a gel pack on one side that you can freeze. Just put it on room temp and had been doing a pretty good job stabilizing it. For the really dig-in-y stuff I'll go to the pick.

I went to urgent care to get it xrayed two weeks ago which was two weeks after it happened. No fracture, and the doc said no restrictions. So I bowled again that week. I think that exacerbated it.

Joined my wife's bowling team to hang out and spend time together. So gotta figure out how to bowl every week too! Lots of tape I guess. Here's a week after the original injury.

Yes, I've got hairy knuckles, I know.

I usually play mostly fingers, but some songs with a pick. Last gig my fingertips were extra sore for some reason and the band picked out a couple faster songs we haven't played in awhile. Had to play more songs with a pick than I usually do.

Maybe mention your situation to the BL and use a pick for this show until you're healed. I've heard those felt picks sound more like fingers.

I recommend you go so a hand specialist sooner than later to avoid making it worse and creating a permanent issue. I sprained my left thumb a few years ago and didn't realize how much of a problem it would be - even though it wasn't broken.

Man I sliced open the thumb of my picking hand, right where it would connect with the strings of my guitar - I still played an hour, and left the stage with more thumb on my Les Paul than on my hand....

Unless you are completely unable, go do it, you'll kick yourself if you don't.

First of all, Tylenol 3 or something, and less booze...

I once played a gig a few hours after root canal and the dentist gave me a prescription for Tylenol 3 which I filled on the way to the gig.

The dentist told me the novocaine would start to wear off near the end of the gig but I'd be fine. Well, the novocaine started to wear off in the middle of the first set and I was in some real pain at the end of the set. Since I don't drink alcohol on gigs, I decided to take a couple of the Tylenol 3s, as perscribed, during the break and near the end of the second set I just went DUUUH. It was somewhat difficult to concentrate on the third set but we all survived and the guitarist drove me home.

My recommendation based on experience: rest and ice. Save the meds for worse injuries. Ibuprofen can make tinnitus worse.

Whatever you do be sure to come up with an entertaining story about how you injured it. Bowling doesn't cut it. Bonus points if you tell a different story to everyone who asks.
