I had stopped using the NYXLs after thinking I wasn't crazy about the B and E string tones. Went to Pro Steels and was happy.

A while back, I went to a more reasonable (for a 67-year-old) lighter gauge set of strings (45-130).

A couple of friends have gone to the NYXLs and are singing their praises. So I relented and ordered a couple of sets (nice that they are on sale from $35 to $27 at a lot of places). Put them on my Lull 5-string Jazz style and my new Fender AM Pro II Precision 5. Yes, yes, I like them a lot! And the B and E strings sound better than I remember the last time. Perhaps it's because of the lighter gauges.

Where I heard a really big difference in the strings was on the P5. They replaced the OEM Fender strings and were a BIG improvement. Very solid B and E strings with this bass. I didn't get to hear the Pro Steels on the P5 and I guess I won't for a while at least.

Didn't hear as striking of a difference on the Mike Lull. Sounded great, of course. I was happy with the Pro Steels on the Lull. But I like keeping the same strings on all my basses and I've noted in the past that the NYXLs do seem to last a good bit longer before they dull down and the intonation gets ginchy.

So let's see....

Two preamps in the Lull, one a placeholder and settling on the J Core...

A new bass to settle in, set up, and check out....

.... and with some pot and cap evaluation still ongoing....

And new strings to put on both and settle in.

I need to get back to just playing.... :roflmao:

That's good to hear. I bought a couple of packs since they were on sale, but I've never tried them before. Did you get the tapered B?
No, haven’t ventured into tapered strings territory yet. That last B string issue I had was resolved by lowering the pickups a bit.

I still plan to try tapered strings before too long.

I've been using NYXLs on my Lull M5 for some time now. I'm using the 45-125 set at the moment, I have another set of 45-125 for when the current set dies, plus a set of 45-130 that I've had for a couple years now that I might try in the near future.

I just put a set of 45-105 on my American Std Jazz, but haven't had the chance to put them through their paces yet. I think a lot of the sales on the NYXL string last until May 4, so this is a good time to try them or pick up a few sets for later.

Are the Lulls you guys have 35” scale? Are you using the super long sets or just top loading the regular or long sets?
Mine is a 34” and I use regular long scale strings with the B string just comfortably long enough to be strung through the body.

I used to own a Lull 35” P5 (typical sell now regret later story) that I would order the regular long 4-string set and order a super-long B string to string through the body.

On that bass, I once had a regular long-scale 5-string set that I used, all top-loaded. I didn’t stop long enough to listen and see if I could a difference in top-load or string-through. I didn’t care. Both sounded fine. That debate is dead to me.

I will string-through the B string when I can. Because I can…..😁

Thanks. I'm fine with Top Loading. I agree about the debate. I hear and feel no noticeable difference. I love the NYXLs on my 34" scale basses and thought I would give them a shot on my 55-94 that usually wears Hi Beams. Thanks for the info.

I just put a set of these on my fretless Jazz. Really, really nice!! The flexibility brings the mwahhh and the sustain is excellent. Definitely more complex in the mids than the average nickel string in my experience. For Fretless at least the mids are where the magic is.
Cool, this is good to know….

The rounds on my fretless come from my strings changes and I like fretless strings a little dull. The current strings on there are a couple of years old and are probably nickels.

I believe I’ll put a set of NYXLs on the fretless from one of my basses when they need a change. Which can be a while as I’ve noted that the NYXLs stay nice and bright longer than the steels and nickels.

Hey Guys,
I thought I would give you an update. Upon playing my L2000 I realized that the Dunlop Super Brights it was wearing are still very bright indeed! ;) I haven't played that bass in some time and I think I had put those strings on before it went back in the case. I don't think I've played it in the past two years? The bass was almost perfectly in tune which is amazing considering how rapidly the weather changes here in Vermont!
Soooo...I think I'm going to have to try the NYXL's on a different bass that may need a string change. The Auroras that one of my Peavey Cirrus' are currently wearing could stand a change? I'll report back but the NY's may have to go in the string box for a bit.
Thanks!
Brent
