I'm loving the song. We have been playing it for quite a while now and I'm always digging in and learning more of Berry's lines. He is always adding and changing and ALWAYS Always in the pocket. His groove is mesmerizing. To me. And it's such a great song.
Last week I noticed the rhythm guitar parts. The actual rhythm that is played in the background behind Gregs organ, Chucks piano and squeezed in-between the slide of Dickey. Berry's rhythm makes me stand up and take notice.
But I noticed that as happy as I was playing it as good as we were playing it, which had become 'good enough', I couldn't help but be entranced with the whole rhythm of it all and most of all, Berry's lines and how they fit in and made me groove. So I dissected it some. Thats when I discovered the rhythm guitar. It's pretty distinct. So I let our guitar player listen. He realized right away that he wasn't doing anything like that.
Then I turned my attention to the drumming. OK. Its two drummers but it had to be something ONE drummer could reproduce effectively. So I set out to learn the part. I have a drum set here where we practice so it's easy to get on them and practice. I'm not a drummer but I can get a groove going if it's really easy. But this one is just a little tricky. So I spent a few hours learning (the wrong goove) it and it was a bitch. I had such a time keeping time on the hi-hat and getting the bass and snare to line up right. But I got it. Then. I re-learned it.The right way. Man! What a great time. I'm pretty stoked that I got that rhythm down good.
And now, I think the goal of all of this is to just get better at understanding how a great bass line is played. Not the notes but the strong rhythmic character of the lines as well. Maybe I'll record myself playing both and blend them together. Fun!!
