OC-2 Dilemma

I lucked into an OC-2 Octaver that is essentially in the same condition that you would pull an OC-5 out of a Sweetwater box. I’m usually of the opinion that if you have something, play it. But this pedal is forty some years old and looks brand new. I’m having difficulty putting Velcro on it and throwing it on the pedalboard. Am I being stupid?

Reverse the back plate (inside out) and Velcro it. They work the exact same and you’d clean the residue easily after.
Or get a backplate fabricated.

I have an extra backplate that I bought for an old MIJ oc2 to Velcro. No longer have the oc2.

Flip the backplate upside down on the pedal. Use 3M dual lock instead of Velcro and there will be absolutely no residue if/when you want to remove it. Dual lock holds pedals to boards WAY more securely than Velcro. Only use a dime sized piece of dual lock on each corner of the pedal or you might have trouble pulling the pedal off your board because it works so well. All my pedals have dual lock!

Or sell me your pedal if you’re not going to use it.

For me, even a minty vintage pedal is still a tool to be used to make music. There are definitely options to make sure it lives a reasonably comfortable life on your board, but I get why some folks start to see these as "collector's" items or something like that. If that's how you feel, I'd sell it, and be happy with your OC-5, or find a sufficiently beat OC-2 that you won't mind stepping on.

I use gaffer's tape on the bottom of all my pedals, for those with rubber plates I overlap the edge a bit.

There are other good octave pedals, even OC-2 clones. I'd say put yours away and keep it as a collector item. I gave my buddy an 80's DOD FX25 envelope filter like 10 years ago and just recently they really shot up in value. I gave him the same advice.

Absolutely cool pedal. Mass produced and you can get a mint 1982-era for below $300. And there are a ton of them. So if you get Velcro on it you can get another for also below $300. Not bad for a 40 year old pedal with a following.

Reason I say this is “what would do with any other $250-300 pedal”?

It’s a mega cool octave. Rock it. Or collect it. But it’s not a Klon. Rock it. It was made to rock.

If you want to keep it as a precious item, buy another truly used OC-2. Even if you protect the back plate, stomping the pedal will cause some damage anyway. I'd play it; it's just a pedal.

I had a VERY nice condition 70s Hiwatt, and I always felt conflicted about playing it out. Didn't want to be the guy who messed it up.
Thinking back, I should have just played the heck out of it.

And removed the buffer to make it true bypass

and rehoused it and ended up selling it dirt cheap

do yourself a favour imo
It’s old tech and everything else is a copy

get the mxr vintage deluxe octave
Be settled

I did the flip the baseplate and put velcro on it thing, but might look at those extra plates @Stranger Danger mentioned.
Always meant to order a few spare baseplates but never got round to it.

I use these. Pedals stay in place like a champ and the pads are easy to trim to size, easily removable/reusable. No residue, etc.
