In addition to my tribute band I am in a 3 piece cover band project and we have settled on The Wallomatics for our name. The name comes from the table top jukeboxes we used to see in diners.

And a tribute to him at the same time!Read an article about a convict that had L-O-V-E tattooed on the knuckles of one hand and H-A-T-E on the other knuckles. He had one of his little fingers ripped off in an industrial accident, thus the band name...Love Hat.
Classic! Yeah, I think almost every district in North America has at least one band called Old Farts, so Vintage Winds is perfect!I now have a band called Vintage Winds. It was named before I inherited it from earlier members. It's all older guys, and we proudly tell people it's code for Old Farts.
I like the background on Boneyard, in particular. That's pretty cool!current primary band: Rubber Gypsy
when we first formed it, the BL/singer/songwriter/guitarist asked me what his originals sounded like.
I told him they sounded like a rubber trainwreck
at the time we had no name, just 3 guys playing some other guy's music
he said 'that would be a great name, but I want the word 'gypsy' in there'
ok, how about rubber gypsy?
20 yrs and counting
stoopid =p
older band: Boneyard
the drummer/BL/songwriter (yes!) played a lot of Dominos
the pile of Dominos you pull from is the boneyard
all of our albums had a hidden domino in the imagery somewhere
Breaking wind seems to be a common theme with older bands!I played in a group of white-haired old guys for a while led by a fellow named Gale. He came up with the name “Gale and the Jazzers” which I didn’t think was terribly clever. I suggested “Gale and the Windbreakers” but he didn’t seem to care for that too much.
I think the other connotation would be great promo for the band! Keep 'em guessing!.
The blind mechanics of disaster is an awesome name!
For a while one of the bands I was in went by 8-1/2 because we all wore that shoe size lol. After too many jokes that it was about the size of something else, we dropped it lol
Also a pretty cool name, even if accidental!Once I accidentally named an original band I was in. We were auditioning bassists and drummers. (I played guitar at the time) While tuning up, the keyboard player was producing this insect-like sound, I commented "Ahh the insect effect". He and the singer look at me all wide-eyed and said "THAT'S IT!!!! THAT'S OUR NAME!" And thus Insect Affect trudged the L.A. club circuit for over 2 years straight.![]()
I'm sure Merle would have approved!Hi,
For a long time I was in a band called "The Runnin' Kind". We would always tell our patrons, "That's right! Merle Haggard named a song after us."
Silly.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
Good move going to Kinda Sorta! I like that!Naming a band is such a pain--trying to find something that fits, isn't pretentious, isn't taken... When we were in the "find a name" phase, I was describing our music to someone as "a little bit Americana, a little bit rock, a little bit jazz", etc. The person I was describing this to said "Why don't you call yourselves "Little Bit". So, since a Google search turned up nothing on that, we were going to be Little Bit, but we weren't really excited about it. Then our keyboardist offhandedly suggested "Kinda Sorta"--as in, kinda sorta Americana, kinda sorta rock, kinda sorta jazz, etc. And it stuck.
Given that she was drunk, she won't even be able to remember and take credit for it!Way back (around `68 I think) we were just starting out, , we really didn't have a name for the band yet,and we got a call for our first gig. We loaded in and were starting to set up, everything was scattered on the floor. An old drunk woman staggered up to us and said "This looks like F`n mass confusion to me"..So we called the band Mass Confusion for the next 6 years..
Cool! I didn't even know those things had a name.In addition to my tribute band I am in a 3 piece cover band project and we have settled on The Wallomatics for our name. The name comes from the table top jukeboxes we used to see in diners.
I'll just take that inspiration and run with it.Naming a band is such a pain--trying to find something that fits, isn't pretentious, isn't taken... Holy crap! What a crazy story! Kinda like that scene in the Blues Brothers when they play at the country bar. I like the 3 Bags Full name. Again, works on different levels depending how people interpret it.My username comes from an old band name. We were sitting around the guitarist's house trying to figure out a name. We were drinking (you guessed it) Two Fingers tequila.
I once played in a band called "Three Bags Full". It came about from the drummer. Instead of answering "yes" to a question, he would say "Yes sir. Yes sir." Remember the old poem?
Black sheep, black sheep, have you any wool?
Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Three bags full.
Most of our fans thought it was a reference to three bags of weed.
I once had a pistol drawn on me because of a band name snafu. The band name was "Borderline" because the band members lived near the NC/VA border. We played new (at the time.... mid 80s) and classic rock. We were booked in a club by mistake. They usually had country bands. Turns out there was a country band named Borderline with all of the members living near the NC/TN border. They thought we wuz them. We wuzn't them. It didn't end well. Toward the end of the third set, a huge cowboy (the bouncer) literally whipped out a huge revolver and placed it on the stage exclaiming "You boweez iz cutn it awf raht nayah!!!" The rest of the band members were in their thirties. They started yelling at the guy about pulling out a gun. I was 15 or 16 years old. I wuz skeert!!! I packed up and rolled out.
Probably better than, "Meh"I'll just take that inspiration and run with it.
If I ever do an industrial tribute act, I'm totally calling it Bitzer Ebb.
Excellent idea! Here are some at a glance that would be cool: Whirlaway, Smarty Jones, Affirmed, Unbridled, Phar Lap, War Admiral, Spectacular Bid, Big Brown, Frankel, Sunday Silence, Genuine Risk, Winx...there are so many of them. That is a killer suggestion!I made a suggestion to look in the at the names of race horses, some of those names are very cool names.
We settled on "Thundergun". Nothing to do with race horses though.![]()
I actually like that!I have this terribly annoying habit of switching the first letter of the first word in any phrase or name with the first letter of the second word, for example "Lef Deppard" etc.
So, my first band in 1986, we were sitting around trying like hell to come up with a name for our band, and someone asked if we had looked thru any books (right!) and another guy said..."Dude we have looked in every nook and cranny"...so my compulsive name flip thing kicked in...and thus "Crooked Nanny" was born.
I know, its cheesy and silly but it was original and perfect for a band of teenage yahoos who were playing KISS, Ratt, and Motley Crue covers![]()
