Odd buzzing from the open E

Lately the open E on my bass has been making an odd buzz underneath the note everytime I play it.
I've tried adjusting the bridge saddles and truss rod to no avail, as well as making the string sit higher in the nut.
No matter what I do the buzz persists.
It seems to be coming from the string barely hitting a fret when I play...but if that were the case it seems like raising the action would have helped it.
I'm at my wit's end with this, any ideas?

Can it be that your finger action is a little different on the string nearest to you because there are no closer string preventing the finger from going 'downwards' after play? If you bring your elbow a little more to the front (like a 'floating thumb' player - assuming you're not one) creating a more 'sideways' picking action, do you still have a problem?

Have you tried picking softer?

I had a similar problem on my Steinberger XM, turned out the screw on my strap button was loose.Only happened when playing without the strap.Check for any loose screws,fasteners,pick-ups,controls and even wiring in the control cavity.I seem to remember having a truss rod adjustment nut on an old guitar that had loosened up and caused a similar problem.

I've got the exact same problem on my bass but on the A string and only when I use a pick. I'm thinking about changing the saddle.
It disappears when I push down on the string between the saddle and the tuner.

Random buzzes that are not due to string height, nut, or frets:

• Tuners
• Tuner buttons
• Strap buttons
• Bridge springs
• Pickup springs

If there is a screw on the guitar put the proper sized driver in it and check it. If that doesn't fix it, it might be the tuner button. Check each one by holding the button while plucking the open string.

Old style riveted elephant ear (Fender) style tuners can be immobilized with the judicious use of CA glue. One drop will do the trick.
