Offensive Halloween Costume

Is a band of white guys dressing as a mariachi band offensive?

I can see situations where I would be wearing a mariachi costume, and I can see situations where I would refuse to. But for example, putting on a moustache 'to look Mexican' I would never do, halloween or no halloween.

I may or may not insult someone. If I inadvertently do so, I am happy to enter into a conversation, and I'll either stand by what I did or change my behavior.

The bottom line is, it not up to me to decide for someone else whether he or she has the right to be offended. Making that decision for others is offensive in itself, as far as I am concerned.

Right, and by being offended on their behalf, TC is taking it upon himself to represent Hispanics, which is far more offensive.

That would be my choice...

Certifiably Colombian/Mexican here - it's just a costume. People will take offense to anything. Just don't make fun of the culture because then you're jumping the line in terms of professionalism.

People were offended by my Hector Salamanca costume...

As someone from a pretty Mexican infused region of the country I would say it depends on several factors. Who is mostly in your audience, how are you acting, etc. I see no problem dressing up as mariachis and acting like yourselves (its just a costume) but doing gritos and bad Mexican accents could be seen as offensive and the piñata is kinda pushing it too. My grandparents were all from Mexico and I know Spanish, the customs, etc. and I wouldn't even take it too far.

Whenever people don cherry picked signifiers of other cultures, all it ends up doing is illustrating white privilege and dominance by turning other cultures into caricatures.

I'm sorry but his statement tells me that you DEFINITELY have a racially biased agenda an therefore, it is invalid.

I'm not sure if you know this, but people of ALL races dress up on Halloween and could thus be guilty of " illustrating dominance by turning other cultures into caricatures".
