Just got a Paolo G. Warlock 5 string, the spalted-maple finish, neck-thru model with the "widow's peaks" headstock. I ordered it without playing since nobody around here carries anything in the $500-1500 rang; basically, low-end or high-end. I paid $999 w
ithout a case, free shipping, was told it was "A" stock, new. Appears so. * That was a remarkable deal as these seem to go more like $1199+
Fit & finish: perfect finish, great matching of the woods. Not a single fret end that is rough, no buzzes or bogus high frets found. Gorgeous ebony, mother of pearl diamond inlays, cream binding. No mistakes anywhere it seems. [edit]It came with the nut a bit high but after some usual setup it seems right on the money with nice low action - loosened the truss rod a 1/2 turn after dropping nut slots maybe .020"(.5mm)[end of edit]
Playability: Fantastic neck, a bit more of a C than a D in profile. Smooth, great upper fret access,medium-thin front2back. Balance is ever so slightly neck heavy and the upper strap button is on the BACK which tends to make a bass lean out from one's body. I moved the button to the end and both of those situations were totally eliminated. THe body shape works great for me as the narrow "waist" cutout between upper horn and lower bout is where your wrist might rub on some basses. At normal playing angle the lower bout is about parrallel to the floor much like a flying V, which makes it quite comfortable. And if you are a V fan, the sharp cut in the bottom is good for hooking into the inside of your thigh for those high-neck solos where you really want to dig in.
Grover tuners, a basic top-loading bridge of fairly heavyweight cast-brass construction with setscrews for saddle height(and set screw to lock the height) and setscrew to lock intonation adjustment. Individual battery compartment - screw-lid but nice clip to hold single 9v. battery and a quality hard plastic battery clip, not some flimsy pos.
Pickups: EMG "MC" dual coil buckers are nice and bright while providing great growl. The controls are simple: volume, pickup blend, tone.
I'm very pleased - killer look(imo), great sound, great playability for under a grand.
