Official Ampeg Club!: Part II

Well,
I am a love of the Ampeg sound as my first ever Ampeg was an Ampeg G-18 in 1978. I have since 1979 switched to Bass Guitar and I own a vintage Ampeg V-6B, and Ampeg 610HLF, 1968 B25B cab and an SLM AMERICA BA-115. Does this qualify me as an "Ampeger"??? I would love to join up!

Cory -

Your logo is really "green"! :p Is that original, or do you have colored bulbs or gel paper under the plexi? Just curious. I have an original logo on mine, but the green coloring on the bottom edge was faded/burned off long ago and I've wondered just "how green" they are supposed to look.

It's got some kind of green smear on the bottom of the logo. I had another B15, a 67/8 model which did not have this kind of glow, so I wasn't sure about the green on this one when I bought it. I was actually reading your posts with the light green/green/blue strips in the portaflex thread this morning. I don't know a whole lot about this amps history, so it's kind of difficult to say. The guy I bought it from said he picked it up in the 70s and the tolex had been changed to black and the speaker to a JBL and since then he had done nothing but change the tubes (which showed). So, given that it had some changes made, and that they amp is twice my age, I can't say if that green smear was original, but I do like the color.

Hope that helps. FWIW, I kind of liked the look of the blue on yours.

Interesting - It looks like it could be original - the texture of that "smear" looks like mine, but mine is discolored on the outter edges, and completely faded where the bulbs are. If yours is original, I wonder how it stayed like that all these years. I've always suspected that they originally did indeed have a really "green" glow to them, but all the original ones I've seen glow "amber" because there is no "green" left.

Here's what mine looked like without any extra gel paper to make it "green"

Yeah my other B15 (67/8ish) had faded to an amber, so when I got this I was surprised at the color. Thinking about it now, given the condition of the amp (2 prong cord, etc) it probably wasn't played much over the course of its history which may be why the green has lasted.

You're asking for leads on a 30+ year old cabinet in better than good condition. That's a tall order on (I presume) short notice.

You could start contacting vintage instrument/amplifier dealers and bass speciality stores to see if anything turns up.

I'm not in any hurry. I just bought a 76'-79' SVT head. So i'm looking for the mate to go under it. I do have a NV610 that I can use.

www.fliptops.net also makes repros of the early SVT cabs - might be an option if you can't locate a vintage one. The prices are in line with current Ampeg cabinets, and are built by Bruce here in the US. If you wanted or needed to have any custom mods made he can probably accomodate that as well.

Thanks, I checked them out and all I saw was the Square Back one. Which is earlier than the one I'm looking fo.r
