OFFICIAL ASHDOWN CLUB

Placed an order today for the Retroglide 800 bass amp. Its scheduled for release in July. It looks promising and is built in the UK custom shop. Mark was kind enough to answer a few of my questions.

I've been looking for something straightforward with enough power in a compact form that you could just plug in and play. With the graphic eq I'll be able to cut/ boost specific frequencies as needed.

I recently purchased a MiBass 2.0 and 110 cab. I need to do some tests, but I think there may be something wrong with either the amp or the cab. When used together, they have a harsh, honky midrange peak, and it doesn't seem to put out very much overall volume. I have to crank it in my living room when practicing at home by myself. At 400 watts RMS I shouldn't have to do that. I realize I am running an 8 ohm cab so output will be closer to 200-220 watts. Even so, I shouldn't have to turn it up so much. in my practice space I am running an old Acoustic head from the 70's that I've used for years that supposedly puts out 125 watts RMS. Granted I'm running it into an 8 ohm ashdown abm 410h, but it is so much louder than the Mibass 2.0 head.

I ran the Mibass head through the 410 cab in my last practice, and I had to turn the volume almost all the way up to get it the volume to the same as the acoustic head turned 1/3 of the way up. I'm going to try the acoustic head into the Mibass 110 cab and see if it still has that harsh midrange and compare volume to see if it's the cab or the amp. As far as the volume of the Mibass head, I'm not sure. Could it be that I need to run it to 4ohms? With the 110 cab, I don't think it could keep up even at practice volume. I wouldn't dream of trying to play a gig with it. and my band is not that loud. If anyone has this head and/or the Mibass 110 cab could chime in, it would be greatly appreciated. Both seem to get decent reviews, but I'm struggling with the tone and volume of it. This is my first class D micro head, and I was super excited. This thing just hasn't delivered. Could it be that it is defective?

I have a MiBass 2.0 and two Mi 10 cabs. No issues to report regarding bad tone. My personal experience is that it's possible to get a good variety of usable tones out of the amp but it's certainly not the loudest head that I have tried when compared to other options with similar power ratings.

Sounds like your amp might be defective. I run a Walkabout into my mi110 cab and it's definitely plenty loud for a 1x10. The Bass Place, where I purchased my cab, stated that those heads had trouble running at 4 ohms and they only recommended an 8 ohm load. So, I would say that having to run into 4 ohms isn't your answer.

Supposedly The Bass Place is basing that info on customer feedback only. I've run mine with a 4 ohms load without any issues since I received it in March. It's just not a very LOUD amp. With the two Mi 10s I have, it's get loud enough for my needs but I don't know if I could say the same with the MiBass 2.0 powering only one of them....

Just repeating what I heard, I have no actual experience with that amp.

I know and I'm just providing some clarification. I communicated with Dennis @ TBP as well as Ashdown about that matter. Dennis told me that he's heard that from customers. Mark Gooday stated via an email to me that it wasn't a problem. Who's right? :D

Now, I did get my amp from a different source so I'm not sure if that has any impact on things. It's had no problems at all running 4 ohm loads with various cabs since I have had it (2 Genz Benz GB-12T, 2 Mi 10 & 2 ABM Mini 408 NEO).

I picked up a MiBass 2.0 and am running it through an Acoustic 410 II which is an 8 ohm cab. Like it a lot and plenty loud, for me at least. Only issue I'm having is a bit of a hum that I'm having trouble isolating. I believe it to be the fan because it doesn't get louder with volume increases but it is coming through the speakers. The fan itself is audible at practice volumes but not an issue at rehearsal volumes. Overall, very happy with the purchase. Bought at TBP From EBay.

Okay so I figured out what was going on with my MiBass 2.0 head. I actually feel a little silly about it. The knobs on the front of the amp were not all tightened properly so some of them had slipped on the pot poles, and weren't in the position I thought they should have been. Adjusted them correctly to the right position, and tightened them with an allen wrench. Now I can correctly eq this thing!! It's still not the loudest at 8ohms. It gets up to volume, but I have to turn it up quite a bit to get it there.

My fan is a bit loud when I turn the amp on, but I didn't notice any hum. The fan seems to run at the same speed no matter what. I too, only notice it at idle or practice volume, but not at rehearsal volume.

How do you like the tone now?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. It sounds good now. It's my first Class D micro, so I may need to get used to the differences from my old Lead sled. I still may get a KXB-500, that way I could use one as a backup, and retire that old ACC head. The ACC head is 40 years old and sounds great, its just too big!!

Some people have a problem with the fan noise of the Kustom amp. It's not really an issue for me. Well, at least with the one I have it isn't. I can say that the fan of the KXB500 is a little louder than my MiBass. Neither really bothers me much though.

I'm using an orange TB500 with the ashdown ABM 410 (600w), I can get a good deal on a MAG 410 (450w). Would it be worth it to add the MAG as an extra cab?

Your mileage may vary. I had an ABM-500 combo (2 10" speakers) that I paired with a Mag 210T (2 10" speakers and a tweeter). It gave me extra power, but my tone was noticeably altered (enough that my bandmates noticed how much better my tone was after disconnecting the Mag extension speaker). On the other hand, that Mag 210T sounded great with my Electric Blue 15" combo, which had more comparable speakers.

It will work though, and you may not have an issue with getting good tone. I noticed it less when I was playing in a 6-piece classic rock cover band and then went to a 3-piece band, and was looking for a more cutting tone.

1st time here... glad I found this place! I have a CTM -15 and MI 112 that I keep in my "cave" and love the tone. I keep the Gain almost off and set the Master to around 11:30. I crank up the "Bass" just about wide open and back the "Middle" and "Treble" down to get the tone I like. It gets plenty loud at the house but I don't think I'll gig with it. (was using GK MB500 now MB800) So I just purchased on TB the Little Bastard, I'll have it next mid-week. I'm reading a lot of reviews that the LB-30 pairs up the best with 15"s. All I own is 12's. (Ashdown MI 112, GK NEO 112-11 and GK NEO 212-11) I've been looking at the ABM 115 - $399 (too heavy for me at 75 lbs) the MAG 115 - $229 (lighter at 48 lbs) and the one I really like... BUT... wow it's $799 is the ABM 115 H NEO 115 that is only 37 lbs and has the Black metal grill like my MI 112. That cab and the LB-30 would look great together. I'm not sure if I can shell out the big bucks though. To you Little Bastard owners... Do I need to go the 15 route? edit: Just saw on GC in used cabs a KLY 115. They don't list any specs but its going for $349

Oh I'm so glad to see an Ashdown club! Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between the MAG 115 Deep cab that came out around the time of the EVO II MAG 300, and the MAG 115 Slim that's out now? The Ashdown website redirects to the Slim cab when you try to navigate to the Deep cab page. I know they look different but am not sure about the cab and speaker. I'm looking for an external 115 to pair with my EVO II MAG 300-115.

Thanks!
