OFFICIAL ASHDOWN CLUB

What happened? You have a cool rig? Are you having any kind of issues with it?

I also had, for some time, the idea of selling my Ashdown rig and swap it for the Ampeg Portaflex but after a few good advices from TB members, I have decided to keep it...

" the idea of selling my Ashdown rig and swap it for the Ampeg Portaflex"

cant go wrong with either.

heres the deal. I had both, the PF 500 and a MAGC210T-300

I liked the sound of the Ampeg better but liked the Ashdowns overall features better.

I got 2 bum units. and I was a little burned by the MAG only being about 200 watts.

The pros for the Ashdown is that it is a full SS amp as opposed to the PF being class D.

The cons of the Ashdown is that it is heavy and you need a line out to get 307 watts where as the PF weighs 40 pounds and is 350 watts by itself and 500 with a line out.

there are a ton of Ampegs to try locally for me, no one stocks Ashdown in my area.

it would make no sense to me to have a mag head and 2X10 cab given its size when the PF is so much lighter and easy to transport.

I really liked the "non Mainstream" Ashdown line of products from their reviews and my one experience with the MAG regardless of the electrical issue.

Ampeg for me is tried and True

wish I had the room for both:(

Just picked p a second VS-115. All i have at the moment is a cellphone pic from last night's gig, stacked with my older VS-115 and Little Bastard. I grabbed it on the way to the gig.

The newer one has some differences, the logo, the port is bigger, it only has Speakon jacks and it is made in UK instead of China.

I also have an ABM EVO II. And a matching 210, both UK. I find that the sound I'm getting out if it comes across as kind of uh... Scooped, though. Anyone got a few ideas about how to mess with the EQ for a ballsier, thicker tone?

I have a Mag300 and 2x 410. Not sure what you can do to achieve the tone you are looking for but with my rig what I normally do is to hit the Deep bottom and play with the Mid and Treble knobs depending on the room situation, normally setting both at 2 and 1 is the right way. All other knobs (for the ABM you have those levers) I leave them at 0 (no boost/cut). I also have to say I play with a Fender P with SD QP on and that will definitely change a lot the way you should EQ.

Hope it helps.

P.S: All that EQing works great in a full loud band situation (mine) but if I am on my own, during break moments, I do tend to play with the bass tone knob as well.

I'll give it a go. I'll start totally flat, then go from there.

Im impressed! I got an RPM-1 preamp last week . I had never played through any Ashdown gear before but my curiousity got the best of me when I saw this on ebay. Im still a pre amp /power amp rack mount kind of guy and I have a few Trace Elliot pre's that i love. First off , the voice of this pre is very familiar , not suprisingly since it comes from Mark Gooday. I was a little apprehensive about the control layout as its unlike anything else Ive ever used, but after playing it I find it is pure genius. It seems to be a combination of a classic tone stack with 4 bands of active eq in between. Its super easy to dial in your sound. The tube seems to be implemented differently than in my trace GP 12smx, where you can really get some dirt out of it where the Trace remains clean. The closest comparison I can make is that it sounds very much like my Trace Vtype pre , which i run an MXR 10 band eq in the effects loop. At the moment I cant see myself using the sub generator but its fun to play with. Just thought Id chime in with some Ashdown love.

I'm just curious…how reliable has your mag been in gig situations? I have a Mag 300 too, but I've never gigged with it. I've found that the output stage stops when dust collects in the tuner jacks. Have you encountered that (or other) problems?

I've had the Mag for over a year now and been using it constantly with 2 some times 3 rehearsal a week and about 10 gigs, having in some occasions the D.I connect to the table and in most occasions playing in small venues so providing the bass straight from the rig to audience. So far the Mag has performed perfectly in every scenario mentioned above and really loving it! Only thing that has happened was at the first rehearsal after our first gig with the rig that the VU light bulb had blew off or maybe is misplaced due to the transportation. The VU works fine but with no light. I got in touch with Ashdown and they answered the blew off thing... anyway, I've learnt to live with it, it´s a pitty though seeing pix from gigs and your rig doesn´t have the light on :(

Anyway, great amp, no problems. As for your dust thing, I don´t have this issue. I do cover the head with a regular towel but other than that, it might help a bit, nothing else. Give it a clean and cover it, there are Ashdown head cover for Mag, I should take one!

Take care

I think the key is the Flat/Shape button: You have to push it to get a flat'ish sound. When it is NOT engaged, there is a scooped sound indeed.

With my ABM500 I push the flat button, engage the EQ and dial the mid rotary control to 2 or 3 o'clock.
