OFFICIAL ASHDOWN CLUB

I noticed Sweetwater's sale on the Rootmaster 610T the other day and have been eyeballing it pretty hard. Clips and reviews are kind of sparse and I'm really on the fence about getting one.

Can anyone shed a little light on the quality and sound? Would this be a good buy or a hard pass regardless of the price?
Cici Bass on YouTube uses one, with an ABM. She's been using it both with her ambient stuff at home and with the Rock bands on stage.

Might be a hard pass. What do you want to use it for? If it is mostly staying stationary might be worth it. If you plan on moving it a bunch, it is a 123 lb cabinet. I gigged a 110 lb cabinet for years (SWR Henry the 8x8). Back then you had to. Now there are too many solid lightweight and/or compact options to deal with moving large and heavy cabinets.

I have a 410/210 stack and i can ok only compare it to a pair of 212 Darkglass cabs. With multiple heads doing A/Bs the Ashdown has a more hard hitting low end and they both sounded near identical everywhere else.
If I were traveling a lot and had to haul stuff the DG212 would probably be better. At ~80lbs for the pair. Vs the 410/210 around 130lbs combined.

Being similar to a Darkglass 212 with heavier hitting bass makes it seem like it's be a pretty good sounding cab. I know your 410/210 setup isn't exactly the same, but should be enough in the ballpark of the 610 that your comparison would hold up.

Thanks for this. I peeked at a couple of videos and it sounded good. I'll have to check more out when I'm at home with my better headphones. Do you know if most of her stuff is done with a room mic or DI?

I'm not too worried about weight. This cab would either be parked in my music space or light travel around town; but yeah, mostly stationary. It'll mostly be used for practicing/jamming with people (at my house) and recording. Overall I'm more focused on how it sounds. Guess I should mention I play mostly rock and metal

@madasahatter it really shocked me how similarly voiced they were. I used darkglass, ashdown, and handbox heads on them both and the DG was by no means lacking low end but the ashdown just had something extra. Neither one struggled to handle anything I threw at it. When I slimmed down my gear though the ashdown stuff stayed and the DG was let go. I prefer the heft of class AB and the gut punching low end.

The ABMs have front mounted DIs and I haven't seen her running anything from the DI, so I would believe she's running a mic.

I've also noticed her running an ABM-410 and a Bag End of some sort in some of her live footage. She plays the ABM (600 EVO IV?) head in all the live stuff I've seen her in.

The band is the Dave Simpson Trio.

Had a bad preamp tube. So anyway here is the inside of the lb30-2.N.

Nice!

@madasahatter I'd search for it on these forums, I found a little bit but didn't save the link, sorry. Also, big thing to check out is that it's supposedly sealed, like a fridge. Thats a big distinction as it sounds and performs different than most their other ported cabs. From what I recall reading, it's the same overall design as the older CL610, just made overseas and to a lower price point.

I prefer sealed myself. Even though I do like my Ampeg 610, I'd almost kill to be able to trade in for one of these. For the experience though, I'm going to try and build a cabinet that's sealed.

I found a thread here that had some feedback on the RM610, but mostly was sidetracked talking about the ABM cabs. @MadJack pointing me to Cici Bass's youtube has helped me get a little more insight on how these cabs sound. I'll check into the old CL610 since they seem to be close enough to being the same.

In most any other instance I'd be looking at building a 410 or 610 cab myself. Like you said, for the experience and I like doing projects like that. But I have a hard time even buying a decent set of drivers for that sale price. Plus factor in the cost of wood, tolex, hardware, etc. Makes it hard to pass up the Ashdown for designing and building my own that may not work out how I think.

Agreed, for me I lucked out with having an Ampeg 610hlf for donor drivers and hardware, but I need to do some research/experimentation on if they'll work decent in a sealed cab. I'm also curious as to the build on the RM610, in both cases I'm trying to shoot for making a build in the ballpark of 95lbs, shaving a good 20-30lbs off both the Ampeg or the RM. No need for the weight loss now, but I know I'll want it in the future.

On the side too, for the form factor, I'm wanting to try and put together a 412 that can do a split/stereo like a fridge.

After some back and forth trying to decide, I went ahead and ordered the RM610T cab. The video below is what finally sold me on it. Even though it's a pedal review, she's playing through the 610. That gritty Lemmy tone is one of my main sounds and it showed me the cab could handle it really well.

@Novarocker once the cab comes in I'll get you some measurements and pictures. If it's not too much of a pain to pop a speaker off and see in there I'll let you know what's going on on the inside too.

Agreed on the sound. I shoot for a lot of the same tonal/harmonic structures too.

Thanks for looking out. I'm still way tempted on picking one up, but that's going to really help me out!

Hello!

I finally said good bye :( to my most awesome bass...
IMG_3045.jpg

It, quite literally, was too much bass for me to play comfortably for any extended time - short dude here, much like my Jack!

That handsome NG-2 was traded in for...:) ta-da: Meet my new Little Stubby, and the cab I assigned to it - a Berg HDN112!

I had owned an Ampeg PF-20T for a few years, and got rid of it like an idiot... Ever since, I have missed tube bass tone. And thankfully, now it is back! I rely on Origin Effects DCX Boost --> Super Vintage for my 'SVT-inspired' high gain tones via the built in analog cab sim in the Super Vintage. But now, the Little Stubby has drive too - all the way to frickin bass-fuzz :bassist:! YES!

So far, I have plugged into it only to make sure it actually works. It does - but I am still a little worried because this was a 'new' demo-model. There was a reasonable discount, so I bought it, I do not know about the history; bought and dropped and returned? On the demo floor for many years? Not sure... It did come with the full warranty, which I might extend at a modest cost.

I live in a semi-detached, so I will never be able to crank this amp... by itself. But I assure you, I will saturate those EL84s till they die on me :jawdrop: thanks to my Rivera attenuators .

The VU-meter barely moved when I was testing the amp to make sure it works. It is saturday, still early, so I will crank it reasonably soon to make sure the amp gets loud too (not that I will ever need it to get loud).

I am completely new to Ashdown, and the Little Stubby - is there anything particular I should look out for?

Any words of advice, tone tips, links to must see/read material would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Think of drive as a gain control. No idea why they changed the name. Maybe it does something different, but I don't hear it.

Older Ashdown tube amps have a mid-shift switch. This control actually acts on the Bass control. Turn the bass control down and the mid-shift switch has no impact. With the bass control turned up, the mid-shift switch determine how high into the mids the bass control reaches.

My impression is the Feedback control is essentially a variable mid-shift. I think it's a huge improvement over the switch because it lets dial the sound to taste rather than having to choose between two fixed presets.

To my ears the Little Stubby is fairly lean down low and it's not quite a loud as an LB30/ CTM30 head. My Little Stubby starts to distort before the meter hits 0VU. IMHO Ashdown VUs are more for appearances than function. The way the behave varies quite a bit across the range of Ashdowns I own.

Congrats! It's a really nice little amp IMHO.
