Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

I’m seeking the wisdom of fellow Barefaced owners.
Im going to be pushing a pair of Barefaced Two 10S cabs with a Mesa WD-800. When running both cabs, the obvious choice is to run the amp at 2ohms (both cabs set to 4ohms) correct?
What is recommended if I’m only pushing one cab? The cabs are rated to handle up to 800 watts. But I’m a little hesitant, should I set it to 12ohms instead? Thoughts?
(Going to post in the Mesa thread too, want to hear both sides)

what kind of music are you playing? I don’t have the one 10 but I do know that the BF cabs can handle a lot of watts.

I use the D800+ with a pair of 4ohm BF Two10.

When I use both I put the switch to 2ohm. I understand that if the switch were at 4/8ohm and I used a 2ohm load, it would not be a good thing, but the built-in protection will eventually kick in and there would probably not be any damaged caused, just the amp will switch itself off.

When I use a single 4ohm cab, I used to run the switch at 4/8ohm. However, I now leave it at 2ohm. Apparently this is safe. The power is actually limited to around 600W, which gives me additional peace of mind. I believe it also allows you to get a bit more drive than when set at 4/8ohm, but I tend to use it clean or with very very moderate OD, so I can't say I explored that aspect.

You have the Two10S. Using a single one set at 4ohm with the amp's switch at 2ohm seems to be safe. Just watch your volume/bass boost and don't overdo it.

I just can't express enough on how awesome this cab is. A buddy of mine said the bass sounded the same no matter where he stood in the bar and sat in the mix perfectly. The dispersion is truly remarkable and it can absolutely slam if I want it to.

Thank you for the suggestions everyone! Combined with your help and some folks in one of the Mesa threads, I believe I’ve got it figured out.
For 2 cabs, I’ll run the amp at 2ohms, both cabs set to 4ohms. For one cab, I’ll run the amp at 2ohms, cab set to 4ohms. I like this solution as it keeps things simple too. No matter how I run the rig, amp is always set to 2ohms, cab(s) always set to 4ohms.

Ok, I went a little bit crazy ordering a Super Midget with the promo of black friday.

Now as I understood my GK MB200 might come as lacking a little bit of headroom I went on a hunt for a new head and purchased on a whim a GK Legacy 500...before realizing that on 8ohm it's only 180 watt so might be a little underpowered too...then I found a good deal on a Tone Hammer 500 and jumped on it too.

I will compare the 2 head and will probably get rid of one but has any of you any experience with those with One10 and SM?

I had experience with TH500 with both my One10 and SM and preferred TH with SM rather than One10 cause 10 sounded too dark with TH.

I have both. I prefer my Aguilar AG700 with them. I also I like an Acoustic Image Clarus...especially nice with the One10. You have selected amps that are likely underpowered for these cabs at that impedance, but fortunately these are pretty efficient cabs and you can probably get away with it. That said, 300+ watts per cab works great.

. . . . . . . . . has any of you any experience with those with One10 and SM?

I have used my TH500 with BF One10's, SM, SC's and Two10's. I'm a fan of the Stax, Motown, Fame etc school of bass playing so I liked it with all of them. I'm really only using the TH500 with my P bass these days and IMO it was made for a passive P and flats.

Since I bought it I prefer the AG700 with all these cabs. The TH500 has become my backup amp and the active Jazz gets most of the gigs with the AG700, SC/SM combination and the wider dynamics.

Question for you Barefaced experts...thinking of taking the plunge...does anyone have any experience comparing the tone of two of two Big Baby II’s versus a single Big Twin II? For reference I’m currently using a fEarful 15/6/1. Thanks!
Hi Steve, i thought hard about that when i went down the barefaced route. What swung it for me is that i wanted a great sound but also wanted the convenience of being able to make one trip to and from my car to a venue. Bass in gig bag, amp and cab in my hands. doing a lot of reggae made it more sensible for me to go for the bigger sound of the BTII at 4ohms which was the right move. For smaller gigs i then decided to get a BBII. If most of your gigs are indoor with PA you could get away with just the one bb2 as i have done many times when travelling light. The amount of sound you get from that one cab is impressive. I can see the wisdom and flexibility of two BB2’s and you could always turn the tweeter down on one to tame the higher end. I doubt if having two bb2’s would give you anything more dramatically different soundwise than a BT2. Ps: Alembics and Barefaced are an awesome Combination!!!

Hi everyone,
I've been using an FR800 for a few years now. It's been really great. Definitely the best cab that I've owned. One thing that I'm noticing as the gigs go by is that I don't really need a tweeter. I use a Demeter VTBP201S as my preamp, and often times I've got the treble knob down pretty low (I know that this preamp is a bit bright in general). I also have taken to using an OmniCabSim to make my distortion and fuzz sound nice with the cab, and I notice that I'm quite happy with the high response knob set pretty far down. It still sounds bright enough for my tastes. I also notice that I like the cab sim tone quite a bit when playing clean compared to the flat sound of the cab.

I'm thinking to switch to a Four 10 or possibly a Super Twin. The Four 10 seems more appealing because I think I might actually be happier with a more traditional baked in tone. I'm a little nervous that the sound will be too dark or inarticulate or something. I definitely want clean articulation and a nice midrange more than anything. I just wanted to get some opinions. I'd have to sell one before I could purchase the other!

Yeah, I've tried various settings on the omnicabsim, although I typically just turn the knobs until it sounds good! I have a pretty good idea of what a tweeterless cab is going to sound like. I'm also really happy with Barefaced and I'd like to stay with the brand. I just worry when I see the term "vintage" being used to describe gear. To me, vintage means the 60's sort of dark, wooly sound which is not for me. I'm looking for more like punchy, warm, articulate. (Sorry this is my first attempt at describing tone in a forum. It's hard!)

I guess my question is, what do I lose tonally going from the 12" to the 10" and what to I gain? I'm sure lots of folks have made the switch from one to the other. What were your conclusions?

Thanks so much for any replies.

I’ve owned each 12” single driver cab currently offered, and a One10 and Two10. I used to own a Demeter VTBP 800 head at the same time.

If you’ve been using the FR800 switching to the 10” cabs will cut some of the deep lows you’re probably already filtering with the OCSD, but there’s no shortage of low end. The “vintage” references you may have heard only means it in the best possible way. There’s no wooly flab to be concerned about. There’s plenty of articulation and clarity and punch.

If I was in the market for just a bass cab, I would’ve kept my 10” cabs. I do PA duty with my BB2 cabs, so they are what I’ve kept, along with an OCSD.

I have a Big Twin and a Four10, both for bass only. They are both great. I’m not totally happy with either one.

The BT is pretty much FRFR, so it faithfully puts out what you put in, no added magic or excitement. Sometimes that works, but sometimes it doesn’t cut through a live mix as well as I would like, so I end up playing louder than I should to hear my pitches. Of course it can be eq’d, but FRFR with eq (even a nice one like an OCS) is not as satisfying as a good cabinet with some personality. YMMV.

The Four10 has a great low mid bump, in general I love the sound in the mix. It is super articulate in that I can hear the pitch and nuance of every note I play. But, it is quite dark. This is less of a problem when it’s cranked up loud, but it just doesn’t have as much as I’d like in the high mids and highs (especially in my hard rock/metal band). I know the specs say it goes up to 6k, but it doesn’t sound like it with a flat input signal. I can boost the high frequencies a LOT and then they are more audible, but it sounds a bit artifical then, and also my DI signal is crazy ice pick sounding at that point. It would be great if it had a good cone tweeter, but it doesn’t.

As I said earlier, this is my subjective taste, and these cabinets are both amazing in their own way.

But... In the next week or two I am going to be checking out Bergantino HDN and Mesa Subway cabinets to see if their compromises are more in line with what I hear in my head.

I own the Two10s and One10, used to own a BB2. I sold the BB2 because I couldn't dial in a tone that I like with the WD800 head. For most of my gigs the Two10s is perfect, plenty of articulation and it can go deeper than you think too. I've thought about it for a while to get another Two10s to have 2 to cover any possible gig but I just haven't done it. I own Berg HDN series cabs that I use for louder gigs, totally different beasts all together. Having both brands is a nice luxury since I can switch it up to change my sound without GASin for more cabs.

Thanks so much everyone. This is incredibly helpful information.

I am aware that the OCS is not an IR based cab sim. I simply meant that I've tried setting the dials to 4x10. Also, I'm not really looking for any particular speaker configuration. Just something more of it's own sound, and it seems from the above posts that the Four 10 is about what I'm after. I'm not worried about high end. Like I said, I can dial the OCS high end response all the way to Dark and I'm still pretty ok with it. Pretty sure that's around 1k? I usually set it somewhere around noon.

I've been at this for 30 years, and I've owned all of four bass cabs. I don't swap out gear often. So I'm always a bit out of the loop with the world of bass gear. Thanks again everyone.
