Well, the tops Rob uses are bought mainly in the rough and resawn by Rob himself. There is a higher profit margin in the nicer basses and not competing against himself would free up his time for him to focus on the higher end stuff. It would also keep the resale value up on his past work. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't shift the bolt ons to the Expat series.

....Shifting the bolt-ons to the import line......that would be a HUGE disappointment. I know a lot of guys that just flat out don't like neck throughs or set neck basses.

I for one have spent YEARS and yes, I do mean YEARS (close to 10) looking for a great high end bolt on 6. I've had just about every type of high end bass made, and gone through just about every type/model of high end 6, both neck through and bolt on, and have not been able to find one that felt (neck-wise), weighed, or sounded right........that is until I came across Elricks!

I found it with my Elrick for sure. I love that bass, hands down the best 6 I have ever played. It's got everthing I want in a 6. The neck is killer, the weight is perfect (not heavy) and the sound flat out smokes!

I am REALLY impressed with my Elricks. Great work Rob!

Will the handmade NJS's go away? (actually not sure if he's building them anymore, and the ones out there are just in-stock models) ... since he's looking to expand the Expat's options to be more like the NJS's.

IDK ... the thought of the Expat leaves me a bit cold in comparison to the NJS's. Perhaps it's due to the "mass production" feel of some of the boutique builders who have an import line. For instance ... MTD. Their KZ line doesn't have the overall feel of a handmade MTD. The same great playability ... but they just don't have that same jen o se qua. It seems that the small details fall by the wayside when mass production comes into play (ie. Expat's control cover vs. the NJS's). Personally, I'd much prefer a used NJS, than a new Expat.

To me, the Nordy pre reminds me most of the Fbass tonally but with the transparency of the Audere. I suppose it had some of the thickness and boost of the Sado, but like I said, overall, he nailed it, and it works especially well with his pickups. I really like how it works with the Big Splits and Singles.

Two points:
First, the Nordstrand DC's came in the mail. The preamp is being wired up at Carey's shop, they are waiting on black switches for parallel/series switching. Very excited to get these in and checked out.

Secondly, I spoke to Rob today about a new bass, thanks to Bryan, a new e-volution 6 string single cut. I am still in the planning phase, but I have really been gas-ing for one here lately. I am leaning toward a wenge neck, buckeye top, ash body, Macassar finger board. Totally undecided on the pu's / electronics, but I just purchased a Yamaha Patitucci that sounds incredible, so I'm leaning that direction.

The spacing on a standard Elrick 6 and a Patitucci are quite similar (wide at the bridge, pretty wide at the nut), so they should feel similar if you like it on the Yammy. I prefer a tighter nut myself- nut and bridge spacing on a 6 can have a much bigger impact on your comfort than on a 4 or a 5.

I really like the spacing on the Yamaha, I have really large hands so it doesn't feel unnatural. I don't like the fingerboard radius, it seems a bit flat, but other than that it is fine. The 5's seem very narrow after playing the 6, it isn't hard to play but just feels weird. It is easier to go back to the 5's than it was going back to the 4's, something about not having that B string made me feel lost.

Gotta say ... it's not helping my NJS5 GAS!!! Figuring one will pop up sooner or later. Unfortunately, the last two that popped up in the classifieds (both were natural ash/maple) ... I didn't have the financial wiggle room. So, now that I do, within reason (less than I can find at on-line bass stores) ... none pop up. :hmm:

I see you got your 5'ver on the TB boards ... does this mean your fretless is comming around the mountain?

As far as a fretless for me ... going to go ahead with the RB5 fretless project. Just waiting until I go out to my inlaws ... so I can drop it off, since I'll be passing by that way anyway. I figured the fretless project will keep the wife OK with a NJS5 acqusition ... whenever that will be. Might just post a WTB thread after I get my fretless done.

That's too bad. Rob's actually been the most punctual luthier I've heard about. My customs have all been either right on time or even early.
