here's my latest ESP bass...
from my back catalogs, i understand that this model is similiar to the one Masayoshi Yamashita (of Loudness) used. the prev owner defretted it.

.. but one thing though, who in the blue blazes is Shingo? any additional info on this bass would be great.

I have a ESP LTD b-104 from about the year 2000. Its way past its prime, and I'm going to get a new bass . I'm thinking about getting the LTD Viper 404 or LTD Viper 254. I'm also considering springing for the LTD Surveyor 400. Does anyone have an opinion on these? Oh, and whats the differenc between "LTD" and "non-LTD"?
(There is a Surveyor that is LTD and one that is just ESP, the only difference I see in the descriptions is the tuners...)

Thanks for any help/ info

I have an ESP LTD C304. I have it tuned BEAD. I also removed the pre amp because I like passive basses. It has EMG 35Hz exposed pole pickups, 35" scale, and a switch that turns the two humbuckers to single coil and adds the single coils in series to form another humbucker in the center position. It is the most versatile bass I have ever owned.

ESPs are made in Japan, whether its hand made or machine manufactured is determined by the price. ESP also uses better quality materials. LTD try to match this by using USA made products such as EMG pups and preamp, Hipshot Tuners.Bridges. etc. LTDs are also made in Korea. However LTDs are still very good although ESPs are definitely a step upwards, if you can afford it

Whatever ESP/LTD you buy. i really think you get what you pay for (or more if you thinkin about bang for buck). The Viper 254 is very nice (i tried it in the store, but the main difference to the J1004 i bought were the EMG active pickups in the J, while the Viper had EMG passive). So when you compare the Viper 404 to the 254, you will always know that the 404 is always a step higher, whether you're willing to buy it is up to you. I think they might have changed the 254, I was looking at 2006 models

Yes, the ESP site says the 254 comes with ESP pickups and an ESP 3-Band active EQ. Where as the 404 has EMG. The 404 also has grover tuners instead of LTD tuners.

I'm guessing these things, especially the EMG pcikups and EQ, should make a big difference in the sound? I don't know much about pickups :(

Oh, and these basses are "Set neck". Is that the same thing a neck-through body, or is it in between neck thru and bolt-on?
