I am a proud owner of a APB-5. She's blue with stock FGI pickups and pre-amp/bass boost, gold Gotoh bridge and turners.
I basically cut my teeth on this APB-5. But, sadly the master volume pot is starting to crap out on me, and I don't know what to do about it. (Any suggestions helpful)
You know the only hang-up I have about Fernandes basses is there lack of availability internet sites such as Guitar Center, etc... I've seen a few on Musician's Friend, and of course the Fernandes Online Store sells mostly their "X" version and not the deluxe models. So you basically need to buy on EBay or go to a music store. Anyone know why Fernandes are so hard to find?

Because people keep 'em? LOL The vol pot shouldn't be too hard to replace if you can use a soldering iron, or have a friend who can. The hardest part is getting the right replacement.
here's the latest addition to my bass family and from the way this thing plays and sounds it looks like it's going to be a keeper.

just got a fernandes jazz bass guitar that is really nice..actually it's my 2nd fernandes the other one is a pj model.how do you tell the difference between Japanese from Korean made??this jazz bass is pearl white with a white pickguard..really nice..

As far as I've seen the MIJ basses had the truss rod adjustments at the heel of the neck where as the MIK had it at the headstock.
Also Fyi my bass has a sticker on the back of the headstock that says made in Japan along with the serial #.
love the feel and sound of this bass.a bit lighter than a jazz a bit softer voice..love the pearl white color that will turn yellowish thru time..i know so can't wait..

I'll play, and this one has a nice story.
Bought a brand new APB5 (later became the Gravity) in Miami in 1994. First new 5 string I ever bought. I was walking around the store and noticed the neck on this bass was exceptionally slim for a 5 string. I had just started dabbling with 5 stringers and this really seemed nice. The price tag was (IIRC) around $1,200 (list, obviously), so I just kept on looking...at the time, much more than I could justify.
The store owner noticed this, and asked me "You like that bass?" I said sure. "I can give you a great deal on that" she says. OK, you have my attention...
"That thing has been hanging on my wall for years. I'm sick of seeing it. $400 and it's yours." So naturally I pounced.
Played it for a few years, then eventually had Warmoth make me a custom body for it in highly figured swamp ash. Then I had it defretted.
Around 2001 or so, I sold it to a kid in town that really wanted a fretless. I had about 3 at the time, and had had this Fenandes for a while so I figured it was time to move on.
12 years later, the same kid sends me a FB message wanting to know about that bass he bought years ago....he wants to sell it. I tell him all about it, but then also tell him since it's a Fernandes and non-original, he won't be able to get much for it. Only someone who can appreciate what it is would care.
He kinda shrugs and says "Yeah..." Out of curiousity, I ask him what he's looking to get. I don't need another bass but this one has some nostalgia value for me. "Dunno, maybe $250?" he says.
So, many years later, she is back and outfitted with a Roland GK pickup to control my V-Bass unit. It'll be 20 years soon, and even though she's gone through some changes, it's still the first new 5 string I ever bought.

ok lets see if I got this right.
Japan:truss rod adj at neck,logo gold with black trim,MIJ at neck plate.
Korea:same as japan but no MIJ at neck plate.
Taiwan:truss rod adj at nut,logo all black letters.no MIJ at neck plate
what about tuners? any differences?schallers vs gotoh?
how about pots? any difference there too?quarter sized vs dime sized?
how about the neck plate? does all of them say fernandes?
are some of them blank?
don't get me wrong..i love my fernandes..love it more everyday..but I just have to know its origin..

My MIJ is marked on the neck plate and on the S/N sticker on the headstock rear. Headstock logo is black, pots are dime-sized, open Shaller-type tuners, and truss rod adjust is under the pickguard. It also has only 20 fret markers (non-MIJ has 21), as well as a different Model designation, than otherwise identical non-MIJ's
If you can't find anything marked MIJ I'd say chances are it's not.
