Official Fernandes Club

I just joined TalkBass. I came here to do some research on Schecter basses and while browsing through the various threads stumbled onto this one.

I have a Fernandes. Its an older P/J bass. I don't remember what year. It looks like the Gravity body shape but it looks like now they make either P basses or J basses with that body shape not P/J.

This was the first bass I ever owned. It was a birthday gift from my wife. Actually at the time she was my girlfriend and we were living together. I kind of tricked her into it. She was asking me what I wanted for my birthday and I gave her a variety of options with the bass being the most expensive. She was kind of leaning towards something else besides the bass. I got her to agree that we should write down all the different items on individual strips of paper, put the strips in the hat and whatever she picked out of the hat she would get me. She let me write all the strips of paper and of course I wrote "bass guitar" on all of the strips. Guess what she picked? And here it is...

The pictures come through when I look at the post. There are three a full shot by the pool, a full shot on the bed, and a close up of the body.

I wonder if where I am hosting them was down when you looked?

Ok, here some pics. The bass needed a good cleaning and came with old round strings. I cleaned it and brought it to a gig last night. Even with the old strings I got compliments from the sound guy and one guy in the audience about the nice bass sound!!! Our guitar player how is quite picky with sound also likes it.

I dont have another jazz bass to compare against but based on my memory the Fernandes jazz seems to have a chunkier neck than the Fender jazz. Feels more like a precision neck.

Welcome fellow players of the Fernandes!

Hi Guys,

I requested my luthier to check for some info on this bass. He just texted me saying is dated Oct 31st 1997. No info in the bass about where is made. Any way to know if is made in Japan or Korea. Do the japan made ones have any identifying marks on them (ex. made in japan on neck plate or something of that sort)?

Thanks WackoStu. No serial # on the bass.
I asked the luthier to check for something in the neck pocket. He just texted back saying is made in Oct 31 1997. So I assume there is a chop with the date either on the neck heel or neck pocket. Will know it more clear later on when I pick the bass up.

On a different note, I was looking at your pics again and was wondering why your strings arent down in the tuners seating holes. I havent seen a bass string wrapped that way before. Is this something you have always done or was the bass this way when you bought it?
