Official Orange Club II

The gig did not work out as expected. Since I use the Terror Bass all the time, I forgot that the AD200B doesn’t have speakon outputs. I didn’t have an adapter with me. After a brief moment of panic, I realized that we were close to the practice space, and I zipped over there and grabbed my SVT-7 pro. As it turns out, it works pretty well with a couple of OBC-112’s also.

This was the first time I tried this combination. I still prefer the Oranges, but it’s nice to know that the SVT-7 Pro will work in a pinch.

I just posted on another thread that I have been using my OBC112's with my Mesa Bass 800D quite a bit lately. That amp sounds great with those cabs. I also need to throw in the Laney Digbeth, Orange 4 Stroke and Genz Benz Streamliner.

Thinking of selling my Terror 500, seems like I can’t get enough mid’s to cut through the band, even with the mids all the way up. I have 2 of the Orange 12” cabs, last night at rehearsal I hooked up my Aguilar Tone Hammer 350 and dialed in a great sound that cuts through. Am I missing something here? I’ve had the amp for a few years and don’t remember having any issues with cutting through no matter what the guitar player’s sound is

IMHO no. Tone is subjective and you appear to want/need more mids than the TB can deliver. There is nothing wrong with that.

The best you can do with the amp's tone stack is close to flat. This should occur with the Bass cracked open a hair, Treble off, and mids somewhere between 2 and 3 o'clock.

This circuit is not exact but it behave very similiarly: TSC in the web I suggest playing around with it to get an idea how the circuit in your TB works.

If you want a mid boost, you could add an EQ pedal.

Or get an amp that can dial in a mid boost.

Choice is yours.

Good luck!

Thank you, I’ll give it a try, seems like I’ve always got a better sound out of the Aguilar but this band I’m in right now, one of the guitarist is running a deeper sound so normally I would just roll off some bass and add some mids and problem solved. That’s not working in this case.

Late to the game here, but it unfolded the way it usually does: The amp finds me, not the other way around.

I just bought the Orange AD200 mk3 that Tim Schroeder tore down and rebuilt for himself (and documented in his 2-part article in Premier Guitar, links: Part 1, Part 2). @krall was a gracious seller who didn't hesitate to agree to send it across the border to me -- thanks man, and I hope you get your health stuff sorted.

I know Tim a little -- enough to know that he is a cool guy and a master of multiple trades, blessed/cursed with a golden ear, a strong sense of musicality, a deep knowledge of electronics, and a restless inclination to improve what is already good. I was always curious to play through one of his Dozer amps (he's no longer making them) but I thought it'd be too much to spend when I'm not really a "tube guy." With the Orange, my curiosity was piqued by the lower cost of entry. Knowing that he built this for himself, and also knowing a little about his tone/headroom goals, made me pretty sure that this amp would be special.

Well, I brought it to rehearsal last night and it was universally loved. Thick and deep, with an emphasis on booty. I felt like I was too loud but it sat perfectly in the mix. I was worried that it wouldn't have enough power but there's PLENTY on tap. Did I mention "booty?"

I read a post in a different thread that said, "The sound sits in the mix of our band in a way that makes the bass more prominent without being louder ...." and then later, "The hardest part was seriously to not be too loud." This is EXACTLY my experience (with a single Baer ML112 cab). It was so thick that it sat under everything in a way that didn't step on anything else, and put me right in that "zone" headspace.

I have some playing with the gain stage to do, I'd like to get some more midrange out of the head (I'm running the tone controls "flat" with Bass and Treble almost all the way down and Mid up all the way). Maybe try rolling some vintage 12AX7s that I have lying around. I wish it still had the Winged-C KT88s that Tim built it with, too -- perhaps I'll drop in a matched set of JJs.

But I think I'm going to be using this head a lot. :woot:

Congrats on the special AD200B. If you need more mids, I suggest using an EQ pedal.

You may be able to get slightly more mids by selecting the right tubes, but the difference will be pretty subtle.

The Gold Lion ECC83 B759 seems to bump up the mids a bit. I like this version for clean. What I don't like is the lows get a bit wooly if you boost them beyond a certain point. May not be a problem with your tone settings.

The standard Gold Lion ECC83 also bumps up the mids a bit and I prefer it for circuits that will be pushed to drive. The tone is a bit different than the B759 version. I think it has less of a mid boost and the boost covers a different frequency range. Also and the lows don't get wooly.

I think the standard version may no longer be in production as it does not appear widely available anymore. It was labeled as Chinese and I suspect it was probably made by Shuguang, which stopped production for several years. Looks like The Tube Store may have stock. I have some Shuguang 12AX7Bs that sound almost identical, but they appear to be difficult to find as well.

I have the Terror 500 and lately when I turn off the amp it sends weird sound through the pa system, kind of like a siren. It doesn’t send that sound through my speakers, only the line out to the pa. Anyone have this issue?

I don't have a TB 500. However, both of my Sadowsky SA200s let out a little whine when I turn them off. AFAIK it's just the power supply discharging. If I continue playing after turning the amps off, it mitigates or eliminates the noise.

My guess is the power amp in the TB 500 is muted when you turn the amp off.

IMHO, you shouldn't normally turn an amp off without muting the input on the mixer. Every amp I have used produced a fairly loud transient that can damage speakers.

I just ordered a few different NOS 12AX7 tubes (Mullard, Tfunk, Mazda) from Brent Jessee, from whom I have been buying tubes for quite some time, always with great results. (His business has been sold and is now transitioned into new ownership, and I hope the new owner carries on as Brent has.) Since tube-matching in the preamp section isn't necessary in this amp, it'll be fun to move things around (and swap in some other tubes from my stock).

My tone goals are to have more detail in the mids and a bit more extension in the high end, and perhaps refine the huge low-end a bit without losing the slam and booty (there's that word again 🤔). Cranking the gain a bit through the NOS tubes might help with this, too. Also, I'll be adding an EQ pedal to the signal chain in order to achieve the mids boost, as suggested throughout this thread by the always detail-oriented @Wasnex who once again has my appreciation for his white-paper-quality inputs.

And if tube rolling doesn't further my tone goals, I can use the 12ax7s in other gear.

New amps are fun, but I haven't been this excited about one since I tube-rolled my db680 years ago. I never suspected that I might enjoy playing through all-tube heads!

I look forward to hearing about how the amp responds ;) .
