Great! Thanks guys :)
I'm wondering how Mike was able to wire the bridge vol. and MID boost on a concentric pot with the vol. needing 250k pot and MID requiring 50k

Yeah thats a mystery to me too, but there are stacked pots that offer different values upper lower stack in the market..
I still don't know exactly what all the values on my bass are cos I cant find any value on the pots itself with the exeption of the mid 25k and the balance pot 500k + 500k

geezez how I ever even actually took piks and put on computer is a feat worthy of the highest order coz I not smartest or sharpest tool in shed ,now mind you all sorts of wrong buttons have been pushed an a lot of anguish despair not recieveing any assistance now all I gotta do is show an share these images on here ,that step unknown ive looked in all the wrong places or the right places just really don't understand what things mean and never will its just not there unfortunately redneck upbringing so whats next is in others hands coz certainly outa mine lost

You can upload your photos to a website like tinypic or photobucket and then post the links here if you want to share them.

Hope that helps...

Number please!

I have a Killer B 5 early Gibson Nashville production 1993 and Ricky just sold me his blue Standard which dates from 1992, Gibson/Tobias Burbank shop/Japanese. I can only keep one of them, however, so I have to decide which one to sell ... :(

Looks like some more work was done to the headstock :crying: Part of the Serial # is missing now..

I had a brilliant idea to cover up the original damage Ricky posted..but now it's gonna need some serious refinish to bring it back. I almost messaged him to see if he was interested in selling it!

I noticed the difference in the damage which showed up in the eBay auction photos compared to what Ricky had posted here. I hope he doesn't mind me sharing his explanation:
"I had covered up the spot with tape for a while and before posting it on Ebay I removed the hardware to polish the back of the headstock.
While I was removing the tape, I accidentally also removed some of the finish with it (it is VERY thin!). That's all. It was a stupid thing to do, in retrospect as I should not have covered up the spot with anything really...it wasn't really bothering me or anyone else since it was out of sight :/"

Okay, that makes sense..

Whether it's a car or a guitar, anything with a nice painted finish, use 3M Blue painters tape only! :)

:rollno: Now he tells me!

:smug: Just kidding.

Well the "cat's out of the bag!" As much as I love the feel of this bass, the tone was just not "nasty" enough for me. BUT!!! I do have another MTD on the way :hyper: It's not as high-end as this Standard was, but Mike assures me that it will deliver the tone I'm after.

....so what did I get? :D Stay tuned :hiding:

Yessir, your number is 117! Congrats on the acquisition! Looks like Ricky won’t be joining us, though... :(

And here she is in all her Coral B(lu)eauty :)

--early 2000's MTD Grendel 5 in Coral Blue with optional maple top and maple fretboard.

Number please! It certainly checks all the boxes at the moment except the tone is a bit more brash with less booty than I had hoped. Changing the Fodera strings for some Lo-Riders to see if that helps...saving the TI flats as a last resort ($$$!). It feels and looks like superb quality though :)

I have some Sadowsky knobs on it, but still need to change the concentric pot to one with a shorter shaft so I can install the concentric Sad knobs there as well. And there are some black Dunlop buttons on their way.

Just bought serial 2186 from eBay. It's a solid zebrawood basic nt? Not too sure about tobias basses but I always wanted one when I was first starting out 20 years ago! I wanted to get a classic or signature but I guess I'll start out with the basic!

Hi there. I am reducing space in my studio so I am planning to sell every instrument that has been retired for some reason or any other that dos not get used often. I do have a bass collection with a Tobias Standard 5 Made in Japan that I took from a friend of mine who originally purchased new back in the day in NYC. I do believe it is a great sounding Bass, however, it bass been retired for the pass 4 -5 years. I know there are only 400 of those and that they are very good instruments. Since I am not a bass player ,I would like to know how much should I ask for it. There is not a lot of info on the web so I hope you guys could help.

Thanks in advance....

Sorry if I'm performing a little bit of Necromancy but I just picked up a Killer B4 for dirt cheap and I love it. I was hesitant as I usually find bartolini pickups to be too clean and articulate, very "nice and tidy" pickups but it sounds amazing through my Ampeg V-4B.

I'm curious if there is a way to date these basses by serial number (I'm assuming it is a Gibson-Tobias), and if anyone might tell me why my headstock is different. Before I bought the bass, I did some looking around at other Killer B basses and all I saw were black headstocks with the pearl logo inlay, but mine has the bare neck wood showing. I think it looks great, but found it odd. Also wondering what I should polish the body with (its a little grungy from a previous owner) as it does not have a clear coat like I'm used to, it feels like smooth, bare wood, as you can really feel the grain.

Thanks folks!

Hi BT,

That looks to be an Arizona Bass to me. You can send Gibson and email with the Serial number and they will give you the particulars of the make of that Bass. You can search the web pretty easy about Tobias serial numbers nomenclature.

Maralinga it sounds like you have a Toby Pro on your hands! Those are great basses and certainly a wonderful instrument to start out on :) Congrats

Does anyone know how the early three stacked-knob Tobiases were wired? I'm thinking of turning my Standard into a three stack bass with an active/pass. switch where the mid knob is now. The best arrangement I can think of is v/t (neck), v/t (bridge), tre./bass (mid pot in the control cavity like it was originally)
