Been there done that!

I let a really nice Sonus Special 5 go (I'm sure that you remember that one Jason) and it took a little over a year to find another Zon 5. This ones tightly locked up in my music room with my favorite Roscoe 5!:)

Congrats on getting it back!

Also, back to the ongoing discussion on action. From what I read it sounds like his bass has a truss rod, he just doesn't want to have to take the neck off to gain access to it.

If the neck is moving IMO it would have to be related to a setting created by tightening or loosening the truss rod (and it slipping). That neck (with the truss rod relaxed just doesn't move (at least mine sure doesn't).

Here´s a picture of the bass.

Pickles knows the bass for sure, since he was the previous owner (8 years ago). This particular one doesn´t have a truss rod.

Originally came with DR SS strings and then I tried Zon strings (SS and nickels). I´m looking for a médium / médium-low action (not ultra low) just enough to make it comfortable to play and be able to get that "percussive snap".

I´ll try to shim it and will share results later.

That bass is awesome. The reason im thinking you have excessive relief is that i had it set medium/low with no shim ... So something must have changed. If you fret 1st and 24th frets on the B string, how big is the gap between the top of the 12th fret and the B string?

The easiest fix is lighter strings, but that only works if you are ok with lighter strings.

I remember the action was lower back then.
Currently has Zon Nickels 045-130 and the gap at 12th fret is about 1mm when fretting 1st and 22nd fret.

Will check a lighter gauge (045 - 125 maybe ?)

If I'm understanding everyone correctly, then I think I was thinking what Vic was thinking. The relief isn't out of control bad... it's that it's perfectly within the scope of being acceptable, just not as flat as he'd like it.

If that's the case and there isn't necessarily a "problem," a shim could help and, even better, a Plek can do a really good job of getting those frets cut to work perfectly with the current relief.

But, yeah... If the neck bow is out of control, then all the shims and Pleks in the world won't help it.

Well, just added a piece of plastic card in the neck pocket, raised the saddles a bit and feels much better.

Not completely satisfied but closer to my setup preference.

I never understood why my StingRay5's action and most all wooden necks action raises towards the 18th fret .If you look down the neck from the bridge the space between the strings and the neck form a wedge shape ,slowly getting closer to the fretboard as it approaches the nut and further away from the fretboard as you go above the twelvth fret.In a perfect world with your neck set flat as can be, the strings should be the same distance from the fretboard at all frets.Why is this? Is it that the neck is set into the pocket at an incorrect angle? Zon and Modulus are the only basses that I have played that address this issue.I consider this a major drawback on most basses therefore switched to Modulus and Zon.

Iam talking about the difference in height for example , between tthe height of your string from the second fret in comparison to the height on the same string at the 17th fret. Its always higher at the 17th fret? Why?

Did you read the link I posted? It's because of the radius of the fretboard vs. the straight string angling wider towards the bride.

No i was doing this off my phone and didnt notice the link. Thanks . My bad Failing vision :( I did listen to that looping youtube vid of yours last nite. Was pretty novel. Never have tried one of those. Thanks for the info .

Ok so I just went to check out your paintings and read about your vision so not a great choice of words on that last post but I didn't know, my apologies .I will check your paintings out ,thanks for sharing .
