Do you know if the Big Blades are the 'clean and clear' or 'warm and wooly' variety?

Can you tell by the wiring?

Wait, if those are four wire, those are Zen Blades. The Big Blades should be a three wire (+/-/shield) pickup since they are single coils.

Holy Crap, You’re right! I just got this bass and noticed it sounded miles away from my old 2008 519 and figured it was the pickups, but maybe it’s just the combination of the Zens and the Bartolini preamp that I’m not liking.

What about the sound is not to your liking? and might it be possible to run the pickups passive for a while, bypassing the preamp entirely? that might narrow down the part of the signal chain that isn't what you're after.

In my case - as much as I like bartolini pickups (except the singles), i'm not a huge fan of the preamps. Especially on the Zons, the Polyfusion or East preamps seem to pair up with the Barts nicely.

Hi folks, longtime lurker here. Was wondering for those with a Zon fretless, does anyone have any pictures of the fingerboard with and without the polyester coating?

Mine does not have a coating. The material they use is incredibly hard. I have played mine pretty much daily (with nickel rounds or pressurewounds) since spring of 2011.

2001 model, always strung with rounds, no wear

I used to own this one. From what I can tell, the poly coating seems to holding up well.
