Good evening.

I’m helping a colleague begin the process of liquidating his instruments due to advanced medical issues.

He has this USA Zon Legacy Standard, which is a single pickup configuration. I’m not finding much info on this specific set up. It appears to be an early model.

I didn’t find an exterior serial number, and didn’t have tools to open up the cavity.

Any help or info would be appreciated.

That is definitely from the 80's, as the Legacy Standards stopped sometime in the early 90's. That is an OG Bartolini humbucker, and probably a BTB preamp, so that would support 80's. Body wood is the only thing Im not sure of, but its either Alder (most likely), Ash, or Mahogany. Everything else will be standard Zon.

That bass probably sounds killer! Once cleaned up, it will be quite the "barn find", especially with those electronics!

I remember Joe Zon using poplar for the body woods according to some of the old brochures I have I'll need to take a look to verify but I'm pretty sure it's poplar.

So, the original Legacy Standard, serial #1, had a maple body. I found one online that was optioned with a maple core and poplar wings. Online blue book says ash or optional maple bodies.

They usually came with the zp2d preamp with dual pickups. Most of the single pickup models were only two knob (volume and tone). The knob layout is unique on this one, so I still suspect full Bart electronics.

Interesting!

My first Zon, a fretless '97 Sonus Special, it had a Bart preamp in it. After owning the bass for a short while I tried bypassing the preamp to hear how it sounded and much preferred the passive tone. When I ordered my second Zon, a fretted '98 Sonus 5/1, Joe made it just like the third one (yours that used to be mine), passive, one volume control, and the pickup coils wired in parallel.

For those of you who have played both....

Does the 35" on the 519 make much a of a difference one the tightness/response of the 'B' string when compared to a Sonus Special?

For slapping, do you feel constrained with the string spacing on a Sonus compared to a 519?

I have a 4-string on order and contemplating a 5-string to complement.

Appreciate any input, lots of gorgeous Zons on here!

Here is my PERSONAL opinion :

- I did not enjoy so much my 35 inch ZON (could be the model, could be the scale)
- I had a few 34 : B was awesome, actually better than the 35 inch (but pickup set up different to apple to bananas)
- For slapping much prefer the 19mm, after a lonnnnnnnng A/B period I generally prefer the 19mm, I enjoy playing my standard Sonus with 17mm but I would have to be mindful of the songs I'll have to play with (anything fingerstyle is fast and easy)
- Of course you need a 5 strings to complement!!! (there is a nice Sonus 34 inch / 19mm spacing on the marketplace if you want instant gratification)
