Happy to now be a freshly minted Zon owner, having recently received my Zon BG4 bass. This is the first (and currently only) left handed BG4.
What a marvelous instrument. The neck feels perfect to me. It's sits in size and profile between a 60's and late 70's Fender jazz neck, two bass necks I've spent a good deal of time with and to combine the two into one happy medium neck is ideal for me.
I really appreciate the utilitarian look and lack of knobs (I love the preamp being in the rear). I'm also a "set it and forget it" player so this bass works well. Build quality is top notch, comfy weight at 8.9lbs., it plays and feels great. It's very inviting to play and while the quality of the bass is obvious, it doesn't feel like a boutique instrument you need to baby. It feels durable and ready to be played hard and often and will handle it just fine.
The clean tone is clear and ringing without being sterile with nicely balanced low end, it being big and deep with no flub. Kicking in the distortion preamp adds grind and bite and harmonic content but does not rob the bass of note definition. Joe sent the bass to me with the preamp dialed in to Billy's setting and other than a slight dialing back of the gain to accommodate my dirt pedals, I've not tweaked it any other way, it sounds great in his setting. While I am a fan of Faith No More, I didn't get this bass because of that; the simplicity and a bass with onboard distortion really appeals to me.
It's been giving me some killer tones with various dirt pedals too, but the tone of this bass straight into the
@tech21nyc dUg amp is insane. It's so, so good. The onboard dirt sounds killer into a clean amp too, it's giving me really good (but different) tone into an Ashdown head that's set clean.
This is a really ideal bass for aggressive music.
To touch on the concerns people have brought up here: I was told the bass would be ready in 6 months when I placed my order. It took 23 months to the day to get it. I disappointingly did not have the bass for a Brazil tour, Cuba tour and a few significant recording dates I expected to. My advice is be prepared to pay for the bass at the time you are told it will be ready, but do not expect it will be guaranteed ready when you are told. I know people who have recently gotten their Zon bass pretty much within the time they were quoted and others (like myself) who got it much later than expected. Do not order a Zon if you cannot handle to wait. But if you want this quality and tone, you may need to be patient (by years) to get it.
