They get so many good instruments- just look at the Fender Japan website
I wonder what scale it would be though? 34" to 30"?

Big chance, since all SR's are 34 inch.. though I prefer 34'' to 32''.

Can someone briefly explain the theory of fanned frets? Is it mainly to have a longer scale on the low end? Or is it designed around comfort\playability?

I think they look beautiful but I've never had a chance to play an instrument with fanned frets.

Essentially to give even tension and tone across the strings.

You can make a 35" or 36" bass to enhance the B string sound but I (and many others) feel that makes the higher strings too twangy.

Just as a piano or harp has longer strings for the lower notes this would let the B & E strings be long enough to speak well while allowing the G (and possibly C) strings to still sound warm and full.

Exactly.

It's interesting that Ibanez is trying it. I spend some time on an acoustic guitar forum and there are about a dozen guys playing fanned fret acoustics. Logistics are perhaps a little easier since bridges are wooden.

I might not have noticed the fan and assumed it were a normal SR at first glance.

Just a good general rule to have, which often applied to boutique and/or extended range bass threads, often owned and designed by some of our mods.

Being a musician requires thick skin, not just our fingertips. That being said, I'm not keen on people bashing stuff I spec'd or designed. From el cheapos to the most expensive basses on the planet, I may opine from time to time but only in a respectful way.
