Oh so many cabs....

I've been looking at a million different cabs lately wonder was type and combo will be right for me. I play death metal and I currently have an acoustic B200H and a an Acoustic 4x10. I've been thinking about getting an 8x10, but also maybe getting a 1x18 or another 4x10 to throw under the one I have.

Any ideas guys??

Thanks, J.N.

I try not to mix speakers. 9 out of 10 times you end up detracting from the sound instead of getting a good mix.

Also, the 1x18 might not actually give you a better low end than say a 4x10. Just something to think about.

I'm a big fan of 810s, they just cut so well on stage, I always seem to sit perfectly in the mix etc.

It's probably worthwhile saying what size of gigs you play, what the other guys in the band have. Do you have PA support? Would you be able to transport larger cabs to gigs etc etc.

If you are happy with your sound and are just looking for more power. Another Acoustic 410 will give you the same sound but you'll be able to get about 6db louder (double speaker area plus more power from the amp). The accoustic 410 is 8 ohms aye?

Another problem could actually be the amplifier itself. 200 watts at 4 ohms isn't all that much.

Personally, I hate the 8x10 cabs, if you want to have some warmth to your tone and sound like a bass, stick with 12's.

If it was me, I'd get the Bergantino IP's and whatever amp you want and then you're talking some serious power. If you want a smaller system (I have no idea how big the shows you play are) my personal set up would be 2 Bergantino ER 1x12's and a markbass LMII. I have a ton of definition in that set up. This set up ain't just for Gospel/Jazz folk.

It may be problematic with a 8x10 (size). Suggest you get to your local music store and try another 4x10. You'll get the full 200 watts from your amp. You might try a 1x15, but it might not punch thru in death metal.

Dude, before I make my suggestion I beg you to scrap the 1x18 idea. I've been playing death metal for many years and can say that it is totally the wrong sort of cab for that type of music (I don't usually like to comment with such confidence on this site as there is so much variation in peoples tone desires but on this one I'm sure!)

If you like your tone then definately grab another 4x10 that way you can choose whether you need 4 or 8 speakers for the gig/practice. 8 10 inch speakers is a good choice for fast brutal death metal at grand volume levels. :bassist:

Bergantino 6x10, 4x12, 4x10, or maybe the ERs, depending on how loud you need it.... and a good amp....
The LMIII is a good value; this + a 4ohm Berg rig is serious

There's other good stuff out there too, but you just can't go wrong with a Bergantino cab. They cut well and still have bass authority....

You may not want to go less than 500watts

also remember; more is not always better; better is better!!

Well ok I can forget the 1x18 then haha I wasn't set on that anyways.

Also I like the sound of a GS412 but I'm 17 and $1300 is hard to come by. :hmm:

But I have been looking at another 4x10 that I can hopefully get for cheap, it's a beast, it has rear ports but now horn (my Acoustic cab has one already)

Plus another 4x10 is the cheapest and easiest at this point.

And the gigs I play aren't huge, but mid sized, and I don't always have PA support so a rig that can hold it's own against a loud drummer and 2 half stacks is a good thing! :D

Thanks for all the input! Keep it up! :D

For a start, a 2x15 isn't nessicarily going to be bassier. My 4x10 and 8x10 are both far bassier than my 2x15.

Depends if you want a mix aswell (which as said, will often sound like ass). Getting another similar 4x10 will give you more of the same, so to speak. But if going for a 4x10, I'd recommend getting the same model as you already have.

I'm also going to reiterate that power is also something to consider. You'll be getting a max of just over 100 watts at 8 ohms. 200 watts at 4ohms into 2x 4x10 speakers will be louder, but it really doesnt seem the most efficient way to do things. If you were able to run up to ~400 watts into the speaker cabinet you already have then you would be getting about the same volume as you would from adding another 4x10 to your setup as it is.

You also haven't said what you are up against in the band.

Whitbass - thank you for being the one to make sense.

+1,000,000 to this advice (not that different from mine)

As I said, having my LMII with 2 berg ER 1x12's will compete nicely with whatever stack any gutiard has. And you'll still sound like a bassist instead of sounding like you're wading through mud.

You could always give markbass cabs a try as well.

Again, thanks for the help!

But I don't have thousands of dollars to spend on a Berg rig. I would love to, but I could buy a car with that much money.

Right now I'm looking for another cab to add to my rig, not a whol new rig haha.

So basically another 4x10" would be the popluar vote??

Glad that I make sense to someone stranger0, and thanks for kind comment; and its assuring folks like us can agree on these sort of things...

6-Stringed16.....
do keep in mind that tone, volume, throw, everything has a lot to do with giving them enough power, and the right frequencies...I have used 2 4x10 cabs plenty with 350w RMS heads and up to 550w RMS heads, and some other combinations as well....and done quite well with 2 2x10 SWR Goliath Jrs or 1x15 SOB + 2x10 SWR Goliath-Jr rig with 1800w RMS and 2450w RMS but I had not made the best choice in Pre Amps so my sound lacked throw, presence, and other things. Every piece of the puzzle is critical for a happy ending.
All the cabs in the world will not make one happy if you don't have ample power and a pre section that pushes the right frequencies, but then a good quality cab is needed to close the deal..as a cheaper cab is less likely to handle it without breaking up or breaking apart
if funds are tight, then try to continue with more homework to see what gives you the best bang for buck....there's no one single path to happiness in the quest for tone, but you will need to find one that works.......
if your cab can handle it, you might be better off with more power through one 4x10, or if your head has the power to spare and the cab can't handle it, get a better more efficient 4x10, etc. then move up as you can.....in the better direction....
be open minded in your quest, but be slow to spend money....
try your cab with a bigger/different head, or try your head with different cab.......quality matters to the ear, not so much to the eyes.......
I sincerely hope this helps.....I know others on TB have helped me....:D
