Let us know what your budget is, and we'll help find the best bass for the money. A lot of us have spent years and a fortune going through basses. I know I have seen Andy's name on bassgear.com forever moving things in and out, not to mention Toms collection. I have owned at least 30 basses over the last 18 years of playing.

The only guy to go to for serious luthier work is Mark Kaiser at Fret Repair in Franklin. He is right above Fretware Guitars. Mark is an artist, and spends a lot of time building exact replicas of '59 Les Pauls and the like, but also does fret leveling, setup, and all the little stuff that needs done. He is very good. He's not very talky, so don't be put off by that.

If you don't mind driving a couple hours there's a guy here in Columbus who owns the Fifth Avenue Fret Shop. His name is Phil Maneri. He's a bassist and a luthier. He's done my pickup mods and preamp mods on my basses and he does an EXCELLENT job. He's also on TB here. His name on here is uncletoad. He's mostly in the DB section.

I think Tom Bowlus mentioned that uncletoad also does work for him as well.

Well for the bass I don't want to spend more than $300, there is a SR400 at Sam Ash for $369 I may try to talk them down some. Maybe another $100 - $250 for a amp and accessories (bag, stand, strap, tuner, etc.)

First piece of advice -- Buy Used!!! You will get so much more bang for your buck.

I wouldn't advise buying a used amp unless you can check it out first. That Fender has a great sound to it for the money.

Cool, I was just wanting a set up since I'm going from a taper b to non taper b. Would that be insulting to him if I went there for that?

I guess I can handle that myself, but it's been a while and I thought a good set up would be nice.

Yes, I was about to post a recommendation for Phil, myself. IME/IMHO, Phil (Uncletoad) does truly top notch work. Other than the original luthiers, he's pretty much the only guy whom I let touch my basses. Highly recommended.

I don't doubt that Mark is excellent, but THE ONLY GUY? C'mon - there are others who are artists in their own right. Dave Schneider down here does phenomenal work as well. He was the only guy I could find around here who would take on my truss-rod challenged

Mark Kaiser does all my work. He's the one who puts together my insane projects for me. He no longer has the shop above Fretware Guitars. He now sees customers only on Saturday at Fretware Guitars. His website is Link Removed

He does a lot of acoustic work, and built the harp guitar that Eric Loy uses.

McHack, where do you work? I used to work for the staples at the lennox (before getting the job from hell at calltech, and fedex) before moving back out to reynoldsburg. Good to know that 5th ave. does good work... they're listed in authorized gibson repairs, so if I ever fetch my '65 eb-0 from my parent's house in PA I'll know who to trust with it.
