Ok I have narrowed it down to 3 class D heads

To the OP... 3 very different sounding heads. Kind of hard to really make a good recommendation for you without knowing the tone you are looking to achieve, options you are looking for, etc. Without really knowing these points, I don't think you will get the best answer for you.

Where are you seeing the 2-ohm stability? I looked over the manufacturer's page and see:
800W @ 4ohm
400W @ 8ohm

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I can't find anything about that.

Holy crap, where are you guys playing that you need 800w into 2ohms?

Wowsers.

I've been using the Mesa D-800 with three of the Subway cabs. With the impedance switch set to two ohms, the amp is happy to look at three or four 8 ohm cabs. (My regular gig is with a rowdy rock band in a rowdy rock club.)

If you're using a modular rig with single-woofer cabs, it can sometimes be nice to have that much paper pushing air. I've actually turned the amp down when I ran three cabs instead of two. More amp headroom, with increased speaker displacement.

Wait a minute... you are carrying around an 8x10 cabinet?? And worrying about which tiny class D to use? Brother, just go for it. Ampeg SVT or at least a V4B. You are not going to get the weight from a class D that your 8x10 needs. At the very least, maybe a GK 800RB...

I will get a nice tube head eventually...but for now money wise im going with the Class D then once I have it I will always have a back up when I get my tube head

I also voted for the D800. Tonally, functionally and aesthetically works for me the best.
If I want a more "Peggy" tone, I step on a VTBassDI.
Very happy with it.

ok I have narrowed my choices to the following 3 class D heads. So let's hear your thoughts and poll results..
1 Ampeg PF 800
2 Mesa D 800
3 GK MB 800
It will be pushing my Ampeg Heritage 8x10 cab

Which one do you like? Which one has the best warranty? I agree, try the Mesa.
EDIT: Or wait a few weeks for the Quilter Bass Block 800.. THAT will be a great head with a three year warranty.

I went with the B|Amp for the blank tonal palette but my time spent with the Mesa was an eye opener. Compared to the heavily scooped/voiced GK MB Series the Mesa was a yuuuuuuge breath of fresh air. So much more flexible, punchy and clear, Between those three I'd pick the Mesa in a heartbeat no question no hesitation. edit.. I'll add that over time I had 3...count 'em 3, GK MB800's that had issues that required factory servicing. Ampeg tonally for me is a non starter and I had two Peavey MM1000's that has issues and went back to the dealer. The Mesa D-800 and Carvin B1500 have been totally reliable for me.

I have not used the other two but I own a D800 and love it. It's the easiest amp to EQ that I own...set everything flat and you're already in the ballpark and tweak from there.
Works great with every cab I have including an 810e.
The only other amp I take to gigs is the Super Bassman 300. All other amps have become backups.
One more thing...the DI is excellent. Never failed to have a sound guy compliment it.

Not to hi-jack, but are there any good deals on Mesa stuff out there? I've seen $699 (edit: for the D800 head!) pretty much everywhere I've looked...was hoping to score a sweet little discount if possible.

I found some of the GK stuff discounted at Bassstringsonline and apparently the owner is a super reputable and nice guy.

Dunno of new units being discounted, but you might keep an eye on the TB classifieds. I picked up mine for a good price, barely used. Got some Subway cabs that way, too.

Never tried the 'peg. Had MB800 and now Mesa D-800. The Mesa is more versatile....can get dirty in a more pleasing way to my ear, goes to 2 Ohms, has aux in/phones out, made in US, superb service.
All are fine choices. I voted Mesa. If you want only clean tone and massive bottom on tap (and don't need the extra features), the MB800 may have the edge.

That was my initial thought upon seeing the three choices. Second thought was why those three?


I've played all three on multiple cabs and it made me even happier with my choice of a Bugera Veyron. I also have a Peavey MiniMega and I'd recommend looking at that too. There are lots of other choices too.
