I don't care for the look of dots on a fingerboard. Side markers yes, dots, no thanks.

All of my basses have dots though... ; )

Dots with binding is fine with me.

I'm not the biggest fan of blocks and binding to be perfectly honest. It's o.k. but doesn't exactly set my world on fire.

Nice understated dots is fine with me.

I don't care for binding at all, blocks not so much either, combined they are gaudy IMO. Dots I can take or leave.

One of the sexiest j basses I ever saw was a '66 in faded cream with rosewood fb, clay dots and white binding. It really left an impression

I would love to see a pic of a maple fingerboard with black dots/binding.

I find black blocks on a maple neck tacky (sorry Geddy Lee owners) I do like pearloid blocks and binding on a rosewood neck.

The early-eighties gold Jazz with dots & binding is a serious gas item for me, as is a mid-'60s dot & binding Jazz.

There's a respected TBer [I can't recall his name, but he has a PhD in music] that says necks with blocks [real, not painted on like the Geddy] are potentially less stable than "dotted" bass necks. IIRC, he was speaking from experience.
