To me, publicity stunt and attention whore are two slightly different things.
Baron Cohen doesnt spend all of his time whoring himself out to the media, trying to be seen here or there with this person or that.
This is something he does when one of his films is about to be released, and it does great for drumming up public interest in his work.
He makes funny films, and these kind of stunts crack me up.

I haven't seen Bruno yet, not too interested, but The Dictator might be funny. I almost thought it was John Turturro.
Considering it's a joke, playing out his character for publicity of his new film.

Agreed. It's all part of the show when he does these characters, and he wisely spaces them out. I haven't seen him do any stunts like this since Bruno came out, which was three years ago.
Its just a more personal form of marketing.

The trailer isnt bad, but the publicity stunt stuff is so much more laughtastic!
Not all will agree, but I think Sacha Baron Cohen is a comedic genius on the Andy Kaufman level.
I must agree, although he causes me discomfort and belly laughs in equal parts. Very unique, witty, and edgy all at the same time.
I just watched Borat for the first time a couple of weeks ago. This guy knows how to put himself out there and make the sacrifice.

The fact that you agree, while acknowledging the discomfort his brand of humor causes (it does for me a bit as well) speaks loudly as to what he is trying to accomplish, IMO.
You guys should check out Fonejacker/Facejacker, Dom Joly (Trigger Happy TV) and Dennis Pennis (in his prime). Great celebrity humiliation and, as Matticus says, 'guerilla' style comedy.
Yes, he is british. I think his character Ali G might have the closest voice to his "real" voice, though he is still in character, so I cant quite be sure. He may have possibly used his real voice in interviews, but I dont watch many interviews.
He did a segment on Letterman a few years ago as himself, I saw it on Youtube once. A very smooth-sounding British accent, he's kind of soft-spoken, actually.
