If you read Creem magazine back in the 70's you'll remember all the controversy about that of course (lern sum histry kids), Gene Simmons, frankly is impossible to top, for over-the-top (the Gwar dude is just a spoof, that doesn't count), Leland Sklar is pretty awesome, looks like Moses with a bass, Tony Levin, looks like Ghandi with muscles, but makes that work. The queen Suzi Quatro looks pretty great on stage bass in hand, the late Ben Orr was coolness personified, born for the stage. I think Esperanza Spaulding might take it though. rockin the fro. I think I de-aged a year when I heard she beat that Justin Beaver for best new artist at the grammys. Patricia Day of the Horrorpops is up there too, visually. I haven't actually heard her play yet.
