Old Bass Question

I never understood what that thumbrest thing on the lower horn side of the bass was for. I usually see them on old or relic/reissue basses

I'm talkin about these thingys:

I realize this is possibly the stupidest question in the world, but I'm really curious as to its purpose

I never don't know either but I think it looks cooler on that side as opposed to in a normal spot.

I've heard of it being called a tug-bar

Maybe A thumb rest? Always my thought but I'm not sure either. I wouldn't mind one on top, that'd be awesome for how I like to play.

I always wondered the same thing. I think its just there. I always wanted those on the top, until I fell inlove with slap.

this question has been asked before. its called a tug bar. leo fender put them on his basses because he thought it would be easier for guitarists to switch over to bass. you anchor your fingers underneath it and play with your thumb.

They are designed to prevent slapping.

I just wish someday that they'd make this question into a sticky. Somebody asks this same question about once every two weeks or so.

It looks cool underneath but It would help playing if on top as long as you don't slap.
