Hi, :)

Local GC used dept. has this older (I’m guessing 90s, but don’t know) GK 410 cab with no model number or power rating or anything but a little plate that states it’s an 8ohm cab. $149.99 (which I can afford haha).

I’ve been on the steady lookout for a smaller/lighter cab for small rooms (not gigging at the moment, but if this new project goes the distance, I’ll likely be doing a lot of small bars).

It’s a smallish light box which I kinda wouldn’t mind having instead of bringing one of my larger 410 cabs that I’d like to keep in the my studio.

I’d like any info I can get on it, maybe what it might have cost new, or what it’s worth, or how it sounds, or mainly how many watts it will take, ‘cause I’ll be powering it with a QSC GX5 which puts 500 watts (on each channel) to 8ohms, and I don’t want to blow this thing to bits.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. :)

Using your link, you had to search for it, so heres the picture for those lazy kids.

Um, $150 for a 4x10 is always a good deal. Its GK, USA made and sold by GC (so it has to be working).

Sounds solid.

Cool… I may grab it; thanks for the responses... :)

but I was still wondering if anyone was more familiar with the cab to tell me how many watts it can take.

I like my rack setup, and my amp will throw 500watts to it, so if it can’t take at least 400watts, it’s probably not even worth picking up.

I love 410s, and it’s small and light, but I don’t want to nuke drivers in the middle of a gig; I’m sure y’all understand.

I honestly wouldn’t ask, but being there’s no model number, I can’t seem to find any info on it.

Weird that it doesn’t have any info on the cab, not even a model number. :(

Thanks so much for your help, guys (and any more that might come up, as I’m still gonna keep checking this thread).

I’m gonna ASSume it’s 400watts, and go for it. In fact maybe I’ll pick it up after work today since a couple guys are coming over to jam tonight, I’ll hook the rack to it and see what happens.

A smaller/lighter 400-watt 410 sounds perfect, and I have to think this’ll outdo a (cheap) 115 or 210, and I can use it for more than just the smallest rooms… and I think it has wheels on it, I’m not sure.

and at a buck-fiddy… don’t nobody go and snatch it out from me now! ;)

That cab looks like mine which is a gk410t from the early 90's.It is a 8 ohm cab rated at 400 watts.150 is a steal, this is a great cab and worth double that so it's a steal at 150.Cab has Good bottom not great but pretty good for a 410 cab, mids and highs are great.Grab it you will be happy you did.

Just one bump… :o

Well, I picked the cab up, and I’ve been toying with it, but I didn’t get to hear how it sounded with other instruments Thursday ‘cause LG has been ill and the weather was horrible.

Tonight I’ll have drummer and two guitarists to jam with and see what happens.

I took some pictures, but my latest laptop won’t recognize *whatever* and can’t post them, but a couple more descriptors I can offer:

It’s tolex-covered (which doesn‘t coincide with some suggestions), has a vent across the bottom, one ¼ jack on the back corner, and little tag that says Made in USA, 8ohms, S.N. 143828

Anyways, I’m still curious if anyone else knows about or had this cab. I’m ASSuming it’s 400 watts, cause even GKs cheaper stuff is that.

I’m also worried about pushing it with 500 watts; I got it to fart and flutter (especially on the B string), but maybe that’s how it was EQed, I dunno, I’m not that experienced, and I’m playing around with all the tone shaping to get the best sound.

Again, thanks for any help/advice. :)

Edit to add--I remember the owners card that came with it said it was rated for 320 watts.

I had one over 10 years ago when I bought it along with a 400RB head. Mine was a 4 ohm model. I hope you like yours. I didn't care for it myself. Won't handle much bottom end without distorting. Very soft sounding cabinet. Compared to other 4x10s on the market at that time it didn't impress me much. It was fine for low volume gigs but even as a monitor on a loud stage I couldn't really hear it. I soon traded it in and got a pair of 1x15 cabs at 8 ohms each. One 8 ohm cab (a Yorkville Sound) was bigger, and deeper sounding than the GK. The Yorkvilles were lighter too. GKs new 4x10 cabinets are much better. Of course, they're heavier (unless you go Neo) and more expensive.

Still, for $150 that's not bad. If you paired it with a small used 1x15 it would be a better rig.

Thanks for the info.

I have two Fender Pro 410s, and I was just looking for something a *bit* smaller/lighter for smaller rooms, and was thinking about a 115 or 210, so it it’s a bit softer, that’s fine.

I guess I'll find out tonight how it keeps up.

:)

Forget wattage ratings, it's displacement limit will be a good bit less, same is true for most cabs. Just listen to it, it'll tell you when it's time to back off. You've got a pretty powerful amp there, probably should just run it off one channel. As has been said, any 410 that works is worth $150 so if you end up not liking it, you can likely sell it for even money.

If it ends up seeming like it doesn't put out what it should or distorts at really low volumes, inspect the cones for creases or separation where it's glued onto the surrounds (suspension around the edge), with a magnifying glass and some gentle pressure with one finger if you have to.

Sure GC says it's supposed to work but you don't know what that guy did back there. Did he jam it with his metal band for 3 hours after work or did he plug something into it and say "yup, it makes sound."

If it has some speakers that work but some that are blown, the blown ones will be moving out a lot farther than the ones that work (acting as a piss poor passive radiator).

I am just using one side of the amp (QSC GX5, BMAX pre) in my rack, but I’ve got the compressor on and it’s not distorting or farting or fluttering at all.

It was powered by the previous owner with a GK head that put about 200 watts to it, so it's *likey* it wasn't abused with power.

I’ve been jamming here (pretty loud, comparable to stage volume) in my music room with it for a while now against two Fender tube amps (Twin Reverb, H.R. Deville 410) and acoustic drums w/the kick miced, and it’s holding it’s own just fine. (I’m posting as they’re BSing)

Not blowing them away, but louder than I need, and I’m very happy with it.

And I think I’ve got more than y $150 worth, haha. Funny how I get more excited by cheap/used stuff than my good stuff… :bassist:
