old Geddy "smooth distortion" question

Gave the wt400 effects loop send jack a good cleaning and seems to work better, still not as good as on the Genz Benz or the wtx. Poor old wt400 is 10 years old and it has been well used.

You need to look at the diodes 'long skinny wire' attach one end to the ring connection and the other end to the tip connection on a solderless 1/4" mono jack - then attach a second one running the opposite of the first (small black end on the diode will tell you what is opposite) plug it in and make noise. Or use a pedal patch cable like hizzoner and solder the diods to the wire connections.
 
Ok I tried it. I didn't remember where was my SC40....
I was first glad to see that it still worked !!
It was my main bass preamp in the '80.

So yes the tip work , but you have to crank the gain all the way up and it gives a certain distortion. Robs around 6db of low end , but you can compensate with the Para EQ. I don't know Rush well enough to know if it's "The" thing ..... Sounds interesting.
Thanx for the tip , I'll remove the dust on the SC40 and keep it at hand !

I tried to take a shot to show both front and back , tough to do !
You can see the Diodes beside the output jack.
 
Tried another thing with this combo and interesting enough , it is a different distortion if plugged in "Low" or "High" input, even if the gain is set accordingly.
All this with a passive bass.

very interesting. I wonder if that means the effects loop is parallel to the regular line. I don't know how to explain what I mean other than that the amp mixes the normal signal with the effects loop.

It could be why you don't have to connect the diode plug to the return.

I would guess its like adding a clipping stage in the amp to be mixed with the normal signal.
