old guys playing originals?

Speaking as an old guy I respectfully say GET OFF MY LAWN. I write and record with my band because I now have the skill and maturity to , I don't care if I get famous , done the tour thing 30 years ago and have eaten enough bologna from the hand and curled up next to a skanky old strippers to realize I don't want to go there again. I write , produce and record because I CAN, I don't give fiddlers fudge if one person or a million people hear a song I had a hand in writing. Plus I find getting gigs is easier than if you were a 20 something ringass, most bar owners like the stability and maturity of older bands rather than the unpredictability and general mayhem a lot of young bands bring with them. Plus the songwriting gets better when you are older

For the first 58.5 years of my life whenever I turned on the radio it was always someone else's music coming out. Today, I turned on the car radio and it was me. Had to double take to see if it was the CD player, but it was the radio. That's why I'm an old(er) guy playing originals.

Awesome! That had to be a great feeling one I have not had yet.

I did so a small market live radio show and heard it taped last week...kind of cool.

After reading a couple bunches of posts, WOW!! I don't consider myself old. I am nearing 48. My band plays about 85%+ originals. More fun that way. We tour upwards of 9 states now and I never invite my friends. I also never ask my family to show up.

A lot of good stories here, positive success stories for older guys working the originals angle.

For me I consider older guys over 55.

We all want different things out of this business. I say business because that's what it has become for me and I'm actually proud of that.

I love being out gigging 2-3 times a week, working with my creative band mates. I have no problems with the bar/club environment. We play to appreciative older crowds that love and support live music, not drunks.

And they like spending money at the bar.

Music will never be a buisness for me. it's a passion and a love but never a buisness. The only time I could see it be as a buisness is if It was my sole income and included a fat contract.Yeah... like that will happen :rolleyes:

I feel the opposite, not enough new songs from the old guys. The Stones are releasing Grrr in either a 50 or 80 track version with only 2 new songs.

I know these guys could afford to pay someone to at least ghost write 12 songs for them in 7 years. :hiding:

I'm the opposite. While it's a passion and it's fun, my band is definitely a business. I use to think " business " was a bad word and labeled you as a " sell out ".

Now I embrace the term and I'm proud to be a part of the working local rock scene.

This thread has gone all over the place.

I say play whatever you want at any age and enjoy it.

However, at the local level, if your 60 years old, and you think your going to make it big playing pop rock originals, you might want to think twice about that.

Why do some people always have to judge what others are doing? Who cares what anyone else does? As long as they enjoy it, that's all that matters. Enjoy what you do and realize that others are enjoying what they do.

Because, as an older guy myself, 59 I was hoping to have some sort of impact on any other older guys pushing 60 that are writing pop originals, performing with a band thinking that he can make it into the "big time".

HOW? By crapping on their dreams? Just because you failed miserably at it does not mean someone else can't do it. Sheesh!
