old guys playing originals?

Awesome.Hello TalkBass. I'd like to introduce myself:
In less than 3 weeks time I'll be 52.
And here is the band I play with Link Removed.
We're out every week playing the songs we've written, to enthusiastic audiences all over the UK whose ages range from 16 to their 60s. They come to see the band because they love the songs and the show we put on. In the next few weeks we have (paying) gigs in London, Newcastle and Coventry as well as our home town of Nottingham.
I've not been so creative or prolific with the song writing since I was in my early 20s and I don't think I've ever had so much fun playing in any band originals or covers.
As a band we're not really looking for a "record deal" because we're doing pretty nicely by ourselves. We put out our own single and video to great reviews last year. We're currently working on the follow up. We're doing regular decent gigs in front of good-sized audiences. Our gig fees and merchandise sales cover the running costs of the band and this is a band that's been together for little over 2 years.

As for the bass, it's a Gus G3 Active. The bass shown in the link is actually the one I'm using before I had Simon Farmer refinish it in CAR for me.

Awesome stuff loved the video! Keep Rockin! I'm in the start up stages with a new band playing a type of alt country, punk stoner blues that is super cool. I am also in another originals band but this new bands music is fast and fun to play.

I'm 50 and it seems I didn't get the memo on how old guys ought to avoid playing originals and stick to blues covers...Sorry.
We have just finished the mastering on our new CD of original songs and it turns out that we have already licensed one of the songs to a major consumer products company (can't say the name yet, but they are major) for an ad campaign and a dance "remix" has already been made by someone regarding another of the songs - all before we have even released!

See, if you had read this thread you wouldn't have wasted your time being successful.
I'd be careful believing what you read here. Some of these stories could be as real as Penthouse Letters.
I would ask, Why do people start playing an instrument? So they can play covers or to one day create something their own? I've played in 2 cover bands. The first when I was still in High school, The second about 6 years ago. And a bunch of original bands in between. I noticed that all of the members in the second cover band (I was the youngest by 7 years) could not write or even play the songs a little different to make it our own. I think writing helps you grow as a player. I am now 40 and just got into another cover band with some old friends. This time we all have the same reasons for doing so. We are tired of traveling 2-3 hrs to play 45-60 minutes for peanuts. I also play in a original band with 2 younger guys that I have no reason for doing except create music...

I would not say we are "successful" by any means - nobody is quitting the day job, but we are having a load of fun, that's for sure!

Dude, are you saying I'm lying? I'm not saying we sold a million records or something like that. I am saying that it has been fun and worthwhile for us to record original music at our age. Anyway, here is how ithe license went down. A friend of a friend at an ad agency got an advace copy of the songs and put one into a draft for a pitch. The client liked it and asked to license the song for the ad.
I am not sure about the remix, but I think it was done by a friend of the guitarist who is in the biz of producing techno records.

I'm 41, not 20...I do feel what I am, not old but for sure not young
I always played originals, only. Sometimes even full improvised on stage gigs. It's the only way I play, the only way I'm satisfied and happy.
There are some truths...if you do not care about gigging and, most important, making a career or earn a living with music, age has no importance and can even become a plus.
As someone says, for some musicians (not all), music is simply a way to communicate what's in our souls, it's part or our souls, it's a need, an absolute one, and creativity is an epiphanic moment that raise the bar when battling with our mortal souls.

How much money you make is not always a part of being successful and I think it is highly over rated. Not that I have anything against money, I love it!
If you are doing what you want and having a load of fun then I think most people would consider you successful.

Thanks, I'm not ready to let the cat out of the old bag on this group but lets just say it will wild, interesting and original.
The style and vibe of this band caught my attention even when I tried to ignore them...I was drawn in. They have a few gigs in the book thru early winter and then plan on working on a album and press and that is where I can really help. I will say the 2 members are a little over 20 years younger than me but welcomed me and are very cool

Hi Jack,
I think "experience" is relative.
Even though I have been out there on the front lines for the past 45 years, my abilities are limited. There are still questions I will ask and there are many aspects of performance and executing dynamics that I will always struggle with.
Pompous, maybe, I'm sure that's how I come off to many and I can live with that. Ignorant, you bet, however I really try not to comment on things I have little to no knowledge on.
Rock Star, maybe when I was 17 thats what I thought. At 59, I think I'm pretty humble. For example, I don't take myself half as serious as many of the TBers do.
