old guys playing originals?

It doesn't matter why you do it or what kind of music you play. If you like it and it motivates you to get out of the armchair and out on a stage from time to time stage..great! Nobody needs to express why other's need to do it their way or that you can be too old to do original's. If there is a scene in your area for original music then do it..who care's how old you are........... Again, it's a personal thing and nobody needs to judge.

1)

First of all , very nice band pic. I wish more TBers would include them in their post.

1) Too much is when people gets tired of reading you.

I think your the only one that might be tired of reading my posts. And I'm only about 20% sure about you.

2) This is not religion or politics, this is people doing what they want and you makes no sense to challenge, since there are no rules : some people are born with talents you apparently do not have.

I'm not sure I have any kind of talent. Thats for others to decide.

3) You keep on imposing your view time after time, has become annoying.

To who?

4) But is clear you want to influence others.

True, I do, but I don't think I'm alone there. Other TBers have influenced me and I have learned from quite a few.

The real question you must ask is the amount of NEGATIVE attention you are getting.
Is not clear to you all your replies just make other readers to "know you better" in a negative way?

ACalbass, I'm a performer. I love attention, negative , positive, doesn't matter as long as it's attention. Saturday Night some people asked to have their picture taken with our lead guitarist at a bar gig. I was ticked off, for about 5 minutes.

I am just a fellow just few years younger than you,and my views on the subject are at the other end of the rope, already posted.

Just trying to find the reasons why there is so much overpost from you about your point of view.

ACalbass, I offer a different perspective on certain issues that deserves to be heard. I am not aware that I over post on the forum.

Some things I stay away from. For example, for some reason I don't feel comfortable giving advice to the minors that are part of this community.

At the end of the day, your band looks pretty cool on stage, thats a good thing.

As for anything else were from different worlds. It's called diversity and it's what makes this sweet swinging sphere go round.

Respect & Regards

This is exactly why you should not give an opinion on the matter.
Nor keep repeating it in every post.
Contrary to what the media thought you (that any kind of attention is good),negative attention proyects your image in a way that portrait no values at all.
Meaning, their attention to you will be held as long as you are as bad,despicable,mercy-less,as low a human being can be.
This is ones of those things people take as "good" that aren't.
Unless ,of course, you already know you will never have any values,or honesty,or generosity,or anything good a human being can have.
Also, the idea of a performer is very twisted : you give for granted a performer must be an egomaniac, jealous type of person.
A performer is nothing like that as a rule (you think everyone is like that? is not true,so many humble and courteous, well mannered people are excellent performers too)

You offer a different perspective from a very sickened place, not from a sane one.
I hope you can see that.
A performer is simply a conduit between a musical idea and the public,to interpret what the idea is,grasp ,the best way possible, the author's message and deliver it to the public, being a performer is never an end,is a mean.
This is the natural fight of the performer, the un-natural is ONLY the seek of recognition for the performance.(but is the widespread believe you must look for it,since the intent of the business is "to sell" the performance, not the message,we actually pay to see the performance, and is great when both the performance and the message are equally important in a show))

In the music business there are many realities and cannot really take to the bank yours is the only one successful.(or unsuccessful,if you want to consider for some people, playing covers for a living is the lowest step in a music career)

Also, respects to you,I find very good to exchange opinions in an adult manner.

Cool, we're from different worlds.

Btw were a blues/ rock band with a fair amount of originals.

As far as your comment on performing covers being one the lowest things you can achieve in music.

I don't care if your playing covers or originals, as long as the operation is professional, you gig consistently, paid appropriately and your with good people your a winner.

Off topic:

Sitting in a club parking lot. I thought load in was 4:30. Just found out it's 6:30.

Dang :(

I find the discussion interesting. I believe there are basically two types of performers; those that go onstage to "take", and those who go on stage to "give". I have worked with musicians who's underlying motive to play music is to get attention and feed their insecure ego first. They always seem to be talking about themselves and very willing to give advice like they are experts. Of course it is nice to be recognized for your efforts and talents, but this was the driving force that motivated this one guy I worked with. It was about look at me, all the little lights that blink on my rig, look at all the knobs and buttons I can manipulate and control. Granted, many do use and have a need for such things, but you can eventually tell the difference. This was this guys way of getting attention. Others look for it on talk bass forums. :rollno:

I don't think I fall into either category,tbh.. I play/perform primarily for the exhilaration and connection I can't find anywhere else. The feeling I get during a perfectly executed tutti section at a blistering tempo or the almost telepathic connection during a vamp is indescribable.. You don't get that feeling every time, but the search never ends.

Oh, and the chicks :hiding:

I play for the love of making music with like minded people. Simple as that. Alone we would not make a lot of sense. Together we make cool music that people like. I am totally happy just laying down a groove out of the spotlight. Covers or originals makes no diff to me.

I'm gonna follow BW's lead and post a pic of me gigging in every post..

Me, I love the attention. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. However, I feel you have to give before you can take.

In other words, if I have a bad night for some reason, bad sound, making mistakes whatever. Then I don't deserve any attention.

If the band is locked in and on fire, then yeah give me some attention. Just thought I'd mention that.

I see where your coming from, most definitely..

Attention feeds the ego.. Everyone has one, so the applause is always welcome.. :bassist:

Because, as stated before, I contend that I came into rock n roll music and playing the electric bass guitar in a more profound way and at a better period in time than most.

So when I see statements like the one above, I just think to myself ;

" oh well, another member that doesn't understand. "

I'm 41 & still touring around playing new & old originals in rock bands. Your thinking on a local level you need to get out more. I live in Richmond, VA so our music scene here is legendary for rock, metal & indie bands. Im young compared to the guys in Richmond bands like Lamb Of God & Gwar.

Sounds good, and you're right as far as my position is concerned. My comments were geared toward the guy pushing 60 at the local level.

I have no knowledge as to what happens at the regional or national level.

that's the thinking that keeps me doing it. dudes in their fifties and sixties are still touring and putting out great records. our generation was raised on rock and roll, so there's no reason to think we should be too old to do it anymore.

Why would you stop writing songs because you are not 22 anymore? I am 48 and write better than I ever did when I was young.

Sure, I actually make some money on the weekend playing covers, but I don't write songs to make it big. I write songs because it is my art form!

Talent is more important to success than period you grew up in. ;)

Talent would be a different conversation.

Again you are also are supporting my original point regarding my concern about the gigging and band experience level in this community.

Reagards & respect.
