old guys playing originals?

I think if older guys, guys pushing 60 have been playing and writing originals on the local level for most of their playing lives, they probably have a following, so it's perfectly cool.

Older guys that have a limited background, just wanting to get into or onto the originals scene, should think hard and fast about what their motivation is and want to get out of it.

I say do it if the originals are any good. Because if they aren't, it's going to be really tough finding anyone who wants to play them or hear them anyway.

Good point, but good is relative.

I was in an originals pop rock band with " killer" material. However, regardless of how good we were as a band or how good the material was, there was no local market.

It funny how things work when you have a decent business person on board.

My example is, the originals band, the pop rick band, when we had a show couldn't sell a single CD.

The band I'm in now which I describe as a c level blues / rock bar band can't keep CDs in the shelf. I can't tell you how many times during a break to sign CDs. It's all about understandung sales and how to market your band.

Holy cow, if you have original music in you trying to get out, then why the hell would you let anything stop you, in particular, ageism(which apparently after reading this thread, is pretty common here on TB)?
I didn't become a totally full-time musician UNTIL I hit 40--it took me 'til then to become savvy enough with all aspects of the biz, and to find my voice(and I tried many since I was 12 years old). I'm now more successful artistically and financially with music than ever before, work regularly with people of ALL ages, and I see no reason to start putting on the brakes because I'm . . ."older" **** that.

What do you mean by "full time" musician? Are you saying you make all your income from music? Because if so, I'd be extremely impressed (not that that means much):bassist:

Yes, I make all my income from music. Mostly from composing and writing and some from bass playing(recording and touring). I went completely full-time with music when I hit 40 and haven't looked back. That was 10 years ago. 90% of the people I work with regularly are at least 15-25 years my junior, sometimes more. I'm very fortunate--I had some windows of opportunity open up and I jumped through them and things just took off. It can be done, at any age--just depends on how you position yourself in the biz.

If I'm understanding some of the "NO" responses they think it makes sense for young people to play originals despite having perhaps 5 chances in a million of hitting it big. For old folks like me however, who may only have 3 chance in a million to hit it big, it's a futile effort.

I think there is chance that the critical thinking skills of these "NO" folks may improve as they age and gain experience.

You surely know there is too much of YOU in this thread.
You have not limited to express your opinion, but had to challenge everyone else opinion.
You should have let go many post ago.
Let your rules apply to you,and not everybody else.
(please do not reply explaining your point AGAIN,is not necessary)

This Thursday we're in Indy at the Slippery Noodle then Saturday at the House of Blues in Chicago. We're on Blue Skunk Records. We're had a song used on "NASCAR Today" for their theme song. We opened for Lynyrd Skynrd earlier this year and Z.Z. Top last year. We're old and we write songs and we ain't stopping.

No, I actually don't. Whats the limit, what is to much?

You have not limited to express your opinion, but had to challenge everyone else opinion.

Is there something wrong with that?

You should have let go many post ago.

Why?

Let your rules apply to you,and not everybody else.

My opinions only apply to me, I am not sure that I even influence anyone in the forum. However, I do question the amount of attention I get.

(please do not reply explaining your point AGAIN,is not necessary)

It's not, why?

1) Too much is when people gets tired of reading you.Specially those that are doing the opposite you do,and are happy about it.(older guys playing originals)
So,if you are going to say " do not read it then",you become someone to ignore, since you are not going to understand and appreciate opinions that go against yours.
basically, you can learn nothing from others.

2) This is not religion or politics, this is people doing what they want and you makes no sense to challenge, since there are no rules : some people are born with talents you apparently do not have, thus you have no say on what they should do,you have nothing to challenge it with.

3) You keep on imposing your view time after time, has become annoying. And by your reply, you are not aware of it,you try to narrow all to your small world around you, thinking is all there is.
Is not, there is tons out there you do not know.

4) same as 3),you are imposing your opinions onto others, and hopefully can't influence others, but is relative to the reader.
Some people might take you seriously.(thinking things are the way you say they are)
But is clear you want to influence others, otherwise you post your opinion only ONCE,for other to consider, but it didn't happen,
had to make it clear in many posts.
People got you in your first post,is not enough?
The real question you must ask is the amount of NEGATIVE attention you are getting.
Is not clear to you all your replies just make other readers to "know you better" in a negative way?

I am just a fellow just few years younger than you,and my views on the subject are at the other end of the rope, already posted.
Just trying to find the reasons why there is so much overpost from you about your point of view.

I just enjoy the pics... yours, Blue's, Charlie Sheen playing drums at HOB... :p

Like when you were a kid, you also liked books better when they had pictures? Ya know? Having a little picture to go along with the post is pretty neat, I think.

BTW, nice look on stage.

Acal,

I love gigging, love rock and roll and I love most aspects of the culture. I'm not a great bass player but far from a " Johnny come lately " and I afford myself certain liberties that I feel I have a right to.

I'm an easy target and some are jealous of any level of accomplished be it national, regional , local or just being in a working c level biker bar band.

I would take so much time analyzing me.

I'm not that important.

Like I have said before music is a personal thing and it means allot of different things to each of us. Some do it for the money, other's artistic freedom, or maybe just to get out or re-live their youth or past.

It doesn't matter why you do it or what kind of music you play. If you like it and it motivates you to get out of the armchair and out on a stage from time to time stage..great! Nobody needs to express why other's need to do it their way or that you can be too old to do original's. If there is a scene in your area for original music then do it..who care's how old you are.

Our multi strings player is in his 60's and can play almost any instrument with strings well. He is a great songwriter and truely gifted musician. He plays in our originals band and could play in any band and play any style.
Should I tell him he is wasting his time? What biz is it of mine? He is happy doing what he is doing with us for now going on 4 years. He will tell us when he is thru with us, music, whatever, when he is done. I know he doesn't feel playing in our band is a waste of time. Again, it's a personal thing and nobody needs to judge.
