old guys playing originals?

He's an older dude who came onto this forum after a long layoff and was seeking advice on how to get back into the game. He used to post and PM guys like myself constantly seeking advice. I put him on ignore because I got tired of him constantly sending me PMs to post on his threads and talking about himself. Now, all of sudden he acts like some kind of expert.

You can't stop them from replying to your post either, but some people don't mind talking to walls as long as they get to hear the sound of their own voice.

I think you might be confusing me with someone else.

But I stil wish you continued success in the band booking business.

The wonderful thing about show business is you can do whatever you want, and in so doing, you either rise or fall to your proper audience. There are no rules about what you can play or who has to write it. Young people predominate within show business primarily because they are easier to exploit (mostly by old people). It's a simple game, really.

LOL it's nice and quiet now. BTW I know where your shop is; I'll have to stop in some day.

I'm in my 40s and also came back after a long down time, but I like my day job, don't have to play to make money, and am interested in writing music for its own sake. I've been working with a guitarist and we're forming a band in what feels like slow motion, but when we are ready to gig we'll have a good set to play and the pride (or shame) of knowing it's our own stuff. I'm not opposed to doing covers now and then; I did that back in the day and it was fun, but it's not the best way to express myself.

I'm the oldest guy in my band, the youngest is 24, and none of us are hardcore professionals. It's all fun, and like someone else mentioned, basement jamming beats playing cards or sitting on a couch any night.

Jealousy, it's not really worth much and I am not sure it helps anyone. Again, I wish you continued success in the Agency band bookings vertical.

Gottah run, I have a 4:30 load in and I havn't even shaved yet. But I'll have my phone with me.

I hear you.I told someone we all know that if I ever needed his advice I'd burn my equipment and quit playing. It didn't slow him down a bit. I had to quit reading a thread I'd started because he was posting more than everyone combined and that is no exaggeration. In a way it is really sad. It's like watching someone walk around with their zipper down and they don't even know it.

Most of us don't need the money. I have a degree and career outside of music that affords me a decent living. However it doesn't mean I don't treat band business on my own terms and as professional as posible which means negotiating for a fee.

I'm saying this as diplomatically a posible, the whole " I'm a little better then you guys,I have a good job and don''t need the money, that's why I play for free" is questionable and doesn't fly.

It's fun and it's a joy to gig. It's also fun being professional about it for some of us.

I wish you luck with the originals thing. Your going to need it.

I might have some really good advice for you. As I have said I came into playing bass guitar and music at a better period in time and in more profound way than most.

Well it works for me. I play paid gigs but I make a lot more money than my other band mates with my day job - live comfortably and frankly some of them don't. So the only money I collect is enough to pay for direct expenses (including beer, food). Otherwise I let the band mates split my cut. Doesn't make me better than anyone, that's just what I do.

On the whole, I'd say my gigging totally pays for itself equipment-wise. It doesn't take long to earn back the money you spend if you're reasonably active and aren't changing equipment all the time. That's pretty good for side money. The time spent is the labor of love. Ya gotta forget about direct compensation for that, lest you drive yourself crazy.

I'm old, don't have a job, could use money, and audition unsuccessfully for cover bands.

Not everyone plays originals because they feel they're better than other people. I love seeing cover bands and getting down. I'm patently, empirically worse than you. So when your feelings get hurt and you start generalizing.. think. If you still don't care, I'm sorry.

I doubt your worse than me or anyone for that matter. And everyone auditions for cover bands unsuccessfully.
