Old man with a bass...

Hi fellow bass players,

I'm Patrick, 57 years old. I played some music in my youth, long ago, mostly keyboard, and I even composed some tracks back then.
Recently, during COVID notably, I decided I wanted to go back to playing music, and after trying a guitar for a little while, I fell in love with the bass, an instrument I always liked and which was a big part in my past compositions except it was synth bass back then. So I got myself a used Sire Marcus Miller V3, and started playing the real thing, the one that gives hand aches and blisters on fingers and started taking some lessons too like one year ago. I recently went through a string change (Skull Strings are fantastic) and a full setup too. I'm mostly using a Boss GT-1B multi effect pedal, but I also own separate analogical compressor and distortion pedals, plugged on an old but gold Fender BXR amplifier.
My "inspirations" (or shall I say "masters ?) would be as varied as Marcus Miller, Flea, Cliff Burton, Rob Trujillo, Ann Gail Dorsey, Jaco Pastorius, Eugène Abdukhanov, Tanya O'Callaghan and quite a few others. I'm also a metalhead whose summer holidays consist in participating in various metal festivals (Hellfest, Motocultor, Grasspop, Moz'Hell, etc...), so my main style is heavy rock/metal.
I'm training daily and hoping to progress enough to be able to join a local "Stoner" group in a few months.

Hey, 58 isn't old, I'm 70 and went back to bass just under 2 years ago after a VERY long hiatus (25 years). I picked up a Sire P5 a few months ago and gotta say I love that bass too, even though my primary is a Fender Jazz. Pro set-up helps a lot, changed the way it plays and makes it competitive. I'm not a metal guy, just don't have the stamina to keep up the fast 16th notes, and I play finger style, but I agree totally with your inspiration list. Saw Jaco with Weather Report back in the late 70's and nobody compared, though Stanley Clarke with Corea's Return to Forever band was close.

Also newbie oldie, 58 years. Started playing bass 1 month ago. My first love is still piano/keyboard.

When I listen for great bass I like listening to the motown guys, especially James Jamerson.
Music wise pretty much all music, but favourites lean towards jazz, african jazz, funk, soul and what was called R&B in the 70's.

Jaco is an alien, who played stuff beyond my comprehension.

58 years young! I was 55 when I picked up bass after a 15 year hiatus from guitar. At 70 I play in two groups. Sounds like you have a plan and that’s great! Welcome!
