I recently bought a 98 Warwick Thumb BO-4, which has a few minor issues- pertinent to this forum, the volume pot seems to have an *ocean-like* hiss when turned up full; is this a job for contact cleaner? If not, is this a commonly-found pot that I can fairly easily swap out myself? I can solder but have a slight phobia. Can likely farm it out to a friend who's very good w/electronics. Thanks for all replies.

My gut feeling tells me you may have a grounding issue. Check for any loose solder joints.

Also check to see if the gain adjustment pot is turned all the way up on the preamp. If it is try turning it down.

I keep mine just slightly louder than in passive mode and get great battery life with a strong signal.

Thanks much, gentlemen- update: plunked on it this morning & had no probs. Something loose/rattling around inside I'm guessing..? Will open her up later- gotta damn dinner to attend, & I'm in one of my moods.
